Our Monitoring Tree Surveys - Staying in touch with the trees.

This is a year 1 survey and relates only to the trees you planted this last winter 2024 - spring 2025 season

Each summer season we circulate a short survey to everyone who has taken part in the Trees on the Land project to find out how your trees are getting on and to help to identify any problems that we might be able to help with.

We keep our sponsors and donors updated with news on the trees and these surveys help us to give them accurate information. We will never share contact details or personal information with any sponsors, donors or with any other third parties.

Please don't be shy to tell us about any problems with your trees - we are here to help and can give advice to fix most of the common establishment problems.

This is the address where you planted your trees. Please include an Eircode or Postcode or a Latitude / Longitude location is also fine.

Please describe how your trees are getting on in general. Let us know if they are thriving and growing well and if you've had any problems or tree failures. *

Please don't be shy to tell us about any problems you have had - we can offer plenty of advice and support to help sort out any issues and we are always willing to provide additional trees to fill in gaps where trees have failed. If you planted more than one area of trees (e.g. a hedgerow and a woodland area), please try to describe how each area is doing.

Please describe your management of the trees e.g. if you have been weeding or trampling around them or mowing the grass, if you have added mulches to keep the weeds down, or tree guards and stakes to protect the trees.

We don't mind if you haven't done any of these things, young trees often do best left alone to grow without much intervention. Sometimes knowing a bit about the management can help us to to identify the cause of any problems you might have.

Please give an approximate percentage of healthy living trees that are doing well.*

This figure should include trees that are alive and well with no obvious problems.

Please give an approximate percentage of tree failures (dead trees), if any, that you have observed.

This figure should only include trees that are dead, i.e. which have brown dead leaves, brittle branches or stems that snap easily, showing no buds, green leaves or new growth. A tree may appear to be dead but on close inspection you might find that it has new young growth at the base. You can make a small scratch to the bark with your thumb nail on the main stem - if you can see green under the scratch, the tree is alive and if it is hard and brown the tree is dead.

Please give an approximate percentage of trees that are damaged, if any, that you have observed.

This figure should only include trees that are obviously damaged or struggling but are still alive, e.g. trees that have been eaten or chewed by livestock or wildlife, trees with damaged bark, yellowing leaves, dead branches or which are showing new growth at the base after damage to the tops.

Please describe any failed and/or damaged trees as best you can and tell us what you think might have caused the problems.

We don't mind hearing about problems with the trees or mistakes you might have made. We can often identify the cause quite quickly and help with advice on how to prevent further damage and rejuvenate the trees. Accidents do happen with mowers or strimmers or with escaped livestock etc. and often the trees can recover well if they are given a good chance.
