There Might Be Cake is a curated group exhibition exploring the absurdity of life and death through surreal, dark, quirky, and playful work. It’s inspired by the calibre of galleries like Outré and Off The Kerb, and the tone and creative styles found in publications such as Beautiful Bizarre.
Open to all ages and stages of creative careers, this exhibition welcomes static mediums including traditional art (such as painting, drawing, sculpture, fibre art, collage, and mixed media), digital art, and photography. It celebrates everything from realism and pop surrealism to lowbrow and conceptual abstract styles.
A $25 non-refundable submission fee helps cover admin, marketing, and general exhibition costs. While all entries are thoughtfully reviewed, submission does not guarantee inclusion, but puts your work forward for consideration in a curated show.

ENTRY GUIDELINES
- There Might Be Cake is a curated group exhibition, while all entries are thoughtfully reviewed, submission does not guarantee inclusion
- Artists are invited to submit a maximum of 2 works
- The theme is open to contemporary interpretation, and we are looking for contemporary and alternative work, styles that celebrate representational visual arts, in all mediums and genres from realism and hyperrealism, to pop surrealism and lowbrow
FEES & COMMISSION
- Entry fee is $25 total (for up to 2 artworks)
- The gallery will deduct 25% commission from sale price if sold
- All work must be for sale. If a piece is sold during the exhibition, the buyer may take it immediately, and the artist is welcome to display another
ARTWORK & DISPLAY SPECS
- Maximum size for 2D work (including frames) is 100cm x 100cm (get in touch if you want to discuss larger or different display options, including sculpture sizes). We are a small space and find small to medium sizes display and sell best
- All work must be professionally presented, ready to hang, and clearly labeled with artist name, artwork title & price on the back
- D-rings with wire is preferred for hanging work
- Perspex film used in framed work will not be accepted as glass
GALLERY SITTING
- Exhibitors are invited and encouraged to gallery-sit during the exhibition. It helps keep the gallery open for more viewers and potential buyers. Please notify the gallery if you're available for a regular or one-off day during the exhibition
- Family members, partners or friends of an exhibiting artist are also welcome to gallery sit during the exhibition
ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION & DROP OFF
- All entrants will be notified via email withing 72 hours of submission closing deadline
- Artwork drop-off times to The Laneway Gallery on Friday 29th August 9AM–4PM and Saturday 30 August 2PM–4PM
- If you are sending via Aus Post or courier, contact the gallery first so we can provide a residential address
- All forward and return freight costs are the responsibility of the exhibitor
INSURANCE
While we take the utmost care of all artwork, The Laneway Gallery takes no responsibility for theft, loss or damage of artwork. It is advised that concerned artists purchase their own insurance.
