    Stop College-Pleasing, Showcase AuthenticityTM

    Prior to starting Your Epic, I learned the hard way about 'college pleasing' - trying to become what I thought colleges wanted rather than being myself. In high school, I forced myself to be a bubbly Key Club leader to impress colleges despite being an introvert, which left me drained and, in an ironic twist of fate, ultimately hurt my admissions chances at my dream school (Berkeley) because I wasn't being true to myself.

     

     

    College pleasing goes beyond just strategic activity choices - it's about the deeper pattern of seeking external validation over internal fulfillment. It often stems from insecurity and the fear that who we naturally are isn't "enough" (in this case for colleges but often this also connects to peers, siblings or parents too), leading us to perform versions of ourselves rather than developing our authentic strengths and perspectives.
