    What is the Lead Program?

  • The Leadership Education and Development Program (LEAD) helps prepare our leaders with the skills needed to build and strengthen the labor movement. This intensive program includes participatory and educational sessions on team building, labor history, the economy, immigration, diversity, public speaking, ethics, and strategic planning. These sessions are facilitated by the Education and Training Department staff, various departments within CSEA (Field and Member Services, Legal, Legislative & Political Action, Organizing, Occupational Safety and Health, & State Operations), Cornell Labor Studies Program, AFSCME Education Department, and United for a Fair Economy.

  •  Program Requirements

  • Applicants must be Local/Unit Presidents

    -or-

    Local/Unit officers who present a statement from their local or unit president, endorsing their application and providing assurance that the officer will have the full cooperation necessary to complete the work required by the program

    -and-

    Applicant must be a certified steward/grievance representative

  •  Program Logistics

  • The program will be conducted on the following dates:

    Session 1: Friday 10/10/25 – Sunday 10/12/25 (Brookmere Hotel)

    Session 2: Friday 12/12/25 – Sunday 12/14/25 (Brookmere Hotel)

    Session 3: Friday 4/10/26 – Sunday 4/12/26 (Brookmere Hotel)

    Session 4: Thursday 8/7/26 – Sunday 8/9/26 (Gideon Putnam)

     

     Session 5/Graduation: Friday 11/6/26 – Sunday 11/8/26 (Brookmere Hotel)

    CSEA will provide meals, lodging and transportation (mileage reimbursement and train tickets only. Rental cars are excluded). No Local or Unit funds can be used to support any participant.

  •  Application Process

  • • Participants are required to attend in every session and use personal accruals to offset any time away from the job

    • Participants are responsible for completing assignments given during the course of the program

    • Participants are required to create and implement a project that will build their local/ unit and strengthen the labor movement

    Participants must complete the application and send SUBMITTED BY August 11, 2025.

    Applications who meet the criteria will be required to participate in a telephone/teleconference interview

    Applicants will be notified of acceptance/non-acceptance into the program
