Painting Sunflowers in Watercolour

Paint Sunflowers — No Drawing Required!

Sometimes the best way to loosen up with watercolour is to simply put the pencil away!

In this video lesson, we will paint a colourful group of sunflowers without using a drawing or tracing. Instead of worrying about matching a reference photo, we will concentrate on the watercolour itself, letting colours mix on the paper, creating interesting shapes, working with negative spaces, and building beautiful rich darks.

I will show you how to start with a few simple shapes and gradually develop them into a loose, lively sunflower painting.

This is a great exercise for anyone who wants to loosen up, trust their brush and have more fun with watercolour.

Supply List for watercolour classes:

• Paint - Quinacridone Gold, Lemon Yellow, Magenta, Alizarin Crimson, & Phthalo Blue (red shade) and Payne's Grey. 
• Brushes - #12 and #5 round
• Paper - I prefer Arches or Fabriano 140# Cold Press, you can use any size for this painting.
• Palette - I use a Robert Wood palette, but there are many different styles out there. You want one with lots of mixing room, don't get too small of a palette. Even plastic plates will work.
• Towel - I paint on a towel so you want one that is bigger than 11x15 inches.
• Water Container - I use small plastic food container
• I used an old credit card or any plastic card to scrape paint and texture into my painting.
