• Flow Water Advocates 2026-2028 Environmental Law Fellow Application

  • POSITION SUMMARY: The 2-year Environmental Law Fellow will support Flow Water Advocates’ legal work to defend the Great Lakes ecosystem, under the supervision of the Legal Director, working closely with a second Environmental Law Fellow hired in alternate years (i.e., 2025-2027, 2027-2029). The role primarily involves developing a portfolio of legal and policy assignments that strengthen the Fellow’s professional skills and advance Flow Water Advocates’ strategic objectives. This will include using state and federal laws to address threats to Great Lakes Basin water resources and the public trust therein, assisting with development of legislation to expand protections, and collaborating on policy interventions. The Environmental Law Fellowship is an opportunity to do front-line legal advocacy protecting one of the most precious global resources, 40% of the planet’s freshwater, from the four-season playground of Traverse City, on beautiful Lake Michigan.

  • KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


    Help shape Flow Water Advocates’ evolving legal strategy. Research and draft memoranda evaluating the most effective interventions to advance our mission, then collaborate in developing strategic implementation.

    Represent Flow Water Advocates’ legal positions to the public. Assist in drafting amicus briefs, public comments, and other legal submissions as necessary to advance our mission. Draft position papers, blogs, and summaries of legal documents for a general audience, with opportunities for direct client contact and representation.

    Be a legal resource for allies. Provide legal support to strengthen the policy work and grassroots advocacy of organizations working on issues central to our mission.

    Draft and review legislation. Work with our policy and communications staff to draft and review proposed legislation. 

    Track relevant legal developments. Follow legal developments, including emerging scientific and economic analyses, relevant to priority Great Lakes policy issues. Synthesize that information for use in advocacy and legislation, partnering with policy and communications staff to advance key public policy priorities.
