We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the government’s short-sighted decision to withdraw funding for the long-overdue A12 expansion.
This is not just a delay, it’s a damaging reversal of progress. The A12 upgrade has been over a decade in the making, secured full planning approval, passed legal challenge, and is ready to begin. It has united MPs across all parties, Essex County Council, and local councils in support, backed by years of hard work, planning, and public funding.
Local communities have already borne the disruption of consultations, preparations and land sales. To cancel now is a waste of taxpayer money, a betrayal of public trust, and a serious blow to Essex’s future. It also compromises the chance of dualling the A120.
We urge the government to reverse this decision immediately and recognise what’s at stake:
🚧 Housing & Planning
Thousands of homes are planned between Chelmsford and Colchester. Without the A12 upgrade, these developments and the infrastructure to support them are at risk. This decision threatens to derail long-term growth plans across the region.
🚗 Congestion & Connectivity
The A12 is a critical route already under intense strain. Upgrading it would relieve traffic pressure, improve safety, and enhance access across central and northern Essex. Without it, congestion will only worsen.
📈 Economic Growth
Essex contributes over £51 billion to the UK economy. The A12 expansion would unlock growth, boost local businesses, strengthen our Freeport, and improve national logistics and trade routes. This is a national economic opportunity we cannot afford to miss it.
We call on the government to do the right thing for Essex and for the country. Reinstate A12 expansion funding now.
