HSA and FSA funds are used to cover medical expenses—things like insurance premiums, urgent care visits, copays, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, medical supplies, and more.
If someone is exercising to prevent or manage a medical condition, they may also be able to use those funds for their membership, classes, or training sessions. To do this, a licensed provider needs to write a Letter of Medical Necessity explaining why exercise is medically necessary for their condition. With that letter, people can submit it along with new receipts for reimbursement.
Note: purchases made before the letter was issued aren’t eligible for reimbursement.
