Fostering is a serious responsibility, and while rewarding, it can also be challenging. There are many questions in this application, and submitting it does not guarantee placement. Our team will review your information thoroughly and may request a property check — either on site or via photos and video. Before applying, please take time to research the natural instincts and behaviors of Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs). These are not typical companion dogs — they have strong guardian tendencies that must be respected and understood. If you’re interested in fostering a puppy, remember: puppies grow quickly, and their instinctual behaviors emerge early and need to be guided with intention. Before submitting this application, make sure you’ve had a thoughtful conversation with everyone in your household. It’s essential that all members are on board and fully understand what fostering entails. Many of the dogs in our care come from deeply traumatic backgrounds, including neglect, abuse, and starvation. Our mission is dedicated to the abandoned working dogs left behind. They need fosters who are patient, compassionate, and committed to helping them feel safe and begin to heal. If you’re truly ready to open your home temporarily to a dog in need — and to be a vital part of their recovery journey — we welcome your foster application with heartfelt gratitude. These dogs come from highly unpredictable situations. During foster, the dog must remain in your care or the secondary applicant's care. If there are changes, vacation, etc. you must inform Unega how and where the dog will be watched while you are gone. Please describe your plan if you must be gone.* This field is required.

Where will the dog go if you are to be injured, hospitalized, etc.?* This field is required.Do you have a person ready to watch the dog? Boarding? Tell us your plan, if that would involve ending the foster, please let us know that too.

How would you handle the foster dog biting you? Someone else?* This field is required.Dogs bite, are you prepared? If the dog is provoked by a child and the child was bit, will you be inclined to remove the dog immediately? Please describe your plan in this case.

By fostering an LGD through Unega, you have the first right to adopt said dog if you are to "foster fail," as the rescue world likes to call it. Be prepared to alert us as soon as you know. Even so, Unega has the final say in who and how the dog is adopted. In the foster contract, this will be highlighted. We understand emotional attachment. Do you accept these terms?
