    Volunteer Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for a volunteer role with Iowa 4-H Youth Development, you must:

    • Meet the age requirements of the specific volunteer role. All teams require two adult (18+) volunteers, but youth volunteers are also welcome!
    • Be willing to provide a child with a safe and positive learning environment.
    • Agree to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Volunteer Background Screening
    • Be free of any charge or conviction of any offense involving harm or abuse of a child.
Be a safe driver with a valid license (if serving as a driver for participating youth).
  • Explore teams are groups of up to six youth in grades 2-4. Explore teams require at least two adult coaches per team. Explore teams meet for 1.5-2 hours once a week for 12-14 weeks.

Challenge teams are groups of up to ten youth in grades 5-8. Challenge teams require at least three adult coaches per team, but can have up to five coaches. Challenge teams meet for 2 hours, one to three times a week, starting in August/September through January or later, depending on state and national qualification.

  • How do we decide which youth are accepted?

Research shows that the longer a person participates in 4-H, the better their life outcomes. It is our goal to retain the same youth and coaches year-to-year in order to build relationships and skills through the Positive Youth Development model.

Spots remaining after returning members have been accepted will be filled based on application date, schedule fit, and continued interest.
