We, the undersigned residents, business owners, and concerned citizens of Henderson, respectfully call on the Henderson Economic Development Corporation (HEDCO), the Main Street Advisory Board, and the Historic Landmark Preservation Board to IMMEDIATELY halt the painting of the "Tomorrow's Texas" mural in historic downtown Henderson.
This mural, approved by unelected committees with minimal public input, fails to reflect the values, history, and heritage of our community. It does NOT preserve the integrity or historical character of our beloved downtown. In fact, many are left asking: What does "Proudly Tomorrow's Texas" even mean?
This design includes elements that disrespect the American flag-- a symbol paid for by the sacrifice of generations of brave Americans. The flag deserves honor, not reinterpretation in a way that diminishes its meaning. Taxpayer dollars are being used to fund this project, yet the process lacked transparency, accountability, and community involvement.
WE DO NOT CONSENT to the current mural design, to the way public funds have been spent, or to the closed-door manner in which this project was pushed through.
We demand the following:
- An immediate halt to all work on the mural;
- A public forum involving stakeholders, citizens, veterans, historians, and local artists;
- A new, collaborative mural design that represents the shared values, rich heritage, and authentic spirit of Henderson;
- A commitment to transparency and public input for future taxpayer-funded projects
If you believe Henderson deserves better - a mural that unites rather than divides, that honors rather than defaces - then add your name and let your voice be heard.
Do you support the "Proudly Tomorrow's Texas" mural as it stands - or do you stand with us for something better?
