    • What is the SPCC Ranch Horse Challenge?
    • This year the Ranch Horse Challenge is comprised of 6 events:

      • Ranch Cutting
      • Ranch Sorting
      • Dummy Roping
      • Ranch Trail
      • Reining
      • Box Drive Box

You may enter as many, or as few, individual classes as you like.

However, to be eligible for a Ranch Horse Challenge hi-point award you must enter at least 4 events in the same division: Open, Non pro or Green. If entering all 6 events, only your best 4 scores will be put forward for the hi-point award at the end of the day.

Each class will have rosettes down to third place as prizes. For our hi-point winners in each division we will have an SPCC buckle as well as a special rosette.

    • General show rules and info
      • In order to reward stockmanship over speed these classes will be judged, not timed. The judge for the day will be Andrew Plant.
      • Riders can enter as many classes as they wish, with their best scores in each event going towards their RHC total.
      • If entering all 6 events, your best 4 scores only will be put forward for the hi-point.
      • To be eligible for the RHC hi-point you must ride the same horse in at least 4 events.
      • Each class will have individual prizes. It is not obligatory to enter all 6 events, although you will not be considered for a hi-point award unless 4 out of 6 events are completed within your division.
      • Ranch Sorting will be judged, not timed.
      • Ranch Sorting will be in teams, as usual, but each rider will be given an individual score based on their performance. This score will go towards their overall Challenge total. Individual team members' scores will be added to give the total score for your team in that class.

In the non pro and green Sorting classes, if a team is a composite of green and non pro riders, your team will not be eligible for a class placing, but your individual score will go towards your RHC total if the class is within your division. E.g. if a green and a non pro rider enter the Green Sorting, only the green rider’s score will be eligible for the Green RHC. Equally if a green and a non pro rider enter the Non Pro Sorting only the non pro’s score will count towards their Non Pro RHC total. To be eligible for a class placing you must be 2 green riders in the green class or 2 non pro riders in the non pro class. Any rider can enter the Open classes with their individual score going towards the Open Challenge award.

      • Non-professional riders may enter any class. However, if you have won a Green as Grass class twice at one of our previous competitions you may not re-enter the same class.
      • Professional riders must enter in the Open classes.
      • All riders must be dressed in smart show attire including a hat (cowboy hat or riding helmet) and a long-sleeved shirt.
      • Horses must be ridden in good quality western tack.
      • Any horse of any age may be ridden 2 handed in either a snaffle or a hackamore, or 1 handed in a curb or bridle.
      • The use of overly harsh bits, tie downs and mechanical hackamores is forbidden.
      • Inspection and rejection of any tack or equipment is at the discretion of the event organisers.
      • All riders must have signed a 2026 SPCC rider disclaimer prior to competing.

Trail pattern to be uploaded nearer the event.

Class rules to be uploaded to Dropbox.

      RANCH CUTTING

In the ranch cutting you will be scored on your ability to cut one cow from a herd with minimal disturbance. You will be required to cut out 2 cows within the 2 minute time frame. You may finish your run before 2 minutes is up as long as you have cut out the 2 required cows.

      RANCH SORTING

Teams of 2 (you must find your own team mate). There will be 10 numbered cattle in a pen which you must bring out in numerical order. This ranch sorting will be judged, not timed, although you will have a cap of 3 minutes to complete your run. Within your team, each rider will get an individual score based on cow control, horsemanship, degree of difficulty, cow sense and eye appeal. Your team score will be the combined total of your individual scores. You will receive penalties for any cows not sorted at the end of your run.

*In the Green class each team is required to sort 6 out of the 10 cows only*

      DUMMY ROPING

The roping dummy will be pulled behind the quad bike in the arena where you will be required to ride alongside and throw a rope at the dummy around the neck, once caught you should stop your horse so the breakaway opens. The Green class will be at a walk, Non-Pro at a trot. You will be scored on your horse's ability to reach a favourable roping position and rate the dummy. There will be a penalty if you fail to catch the dummy after 2 attemps but your score will still be valid. Breakaway ropes will be provided. The run is capped at 2 attempts to rope the dummy.

Our Open riders will compete in a breakaway roping where a live cow will need to be roped using a breakaway rope.

      RANCH TRAIL

We have set up a ranch trail course in the field next to the arena. This will include obstacles such as gates, logs, hills and bridges. Trail patterns will be issued prior to the event.

      REINING

Judges the horse on movements, mastery of a prescribed maneuver and attitude as he is guided through one of 15 AQHA patterns. The horse is required to perform a number of stops, spins, rollbacks, lead changes and circles at a lope. The horse should be willing to be guided with little or no resistance.

      BOX DRVE BOX

The Box Drive Box class is a cow work pattern designed to bridge the gap between simple boxing and full fence runs. It involves boxing a cow at one end of the arena, driving it down the fence, and boxing it again at the opposite end, testing cow sense and control without high-speed fence turns.

    • Additional Show Information
    • On the 14th June, The Chuck Wagon will be open by the arena selling snacks, soft drinks and a light lunch. Cash and card accepted.

This score will go towards their overall Versatility Challenge total.

Any rider can enter the Open classes with their individual score going towards the Open Versatility Challenge award.

The human head is very vulnerable and may suffer considerable damage owing to injuries caused by a fall or impact from a horse. Injuries to the head may have long term effects and in some cases can be life threatening. It has been proven that wearing a correctly fitted, good condition riding hat can protect the wearer from injury or reduce the overall effect of any impact or injury. Sudbrooke Park Cattle Company promotes safe riding and competition and in order to further this aim strongly recommends that protective headgear to approved standards is worn while handling, exercising, riding or competing any horse or pony.

I am aware of the risks involved in riding or competing without a solid and unbroken properly fitted BSI-approved riding hat or helmet bearing the CE mark and certified to BSEN1384/ BS PASO15 or ASTM-F1163/SEI or above and with the straps properly adjusted and fastened. I understand that Sudbrooke Park Cattle Company permits competitors without protective headgear to handle exercise ride or compete horses at their own risk subject to submission of the relevant disclaimer below.
