  • Note that all carriers do include a base amount of Colic Surgery Coverage with their mortality policy form, even if you do not purchase additional medical coverage.

Catastrophic Medical is a more limited form of medical coverage, which provides coverage only in the event of specified illnesses or injuries. Coverage usually includes items like catastrophic accidents, EPM, or laminitis. Limits are lower than what is offered with Major Medical, usually around $5,000 with most carriers.

Major Medical is a broader form of medical coverage, which covers out-of-the-ordinary vet bills for illnesses and injuries. Limits range from $7,500 to $15,000 with most carriers, although most policies do have sublimits for specified items. For example, most carriers only cover ulcers to a lower limit, generally around $2,500 per claim. Most carriers do require horses to be insured to at least the same mortality value as the limit chosen for the medical coverage.

Surgical Only provides coverage for vet bills only for necessary surgical procedures and usually also hospitalization at the vet clinic. Most carriers offer this with a $10,000 limit. This can be used towards colic surgery (in addition to the base colic surgery coverage automatically included with the mortality).

Colic Only provides coverage for all types of colic treatments and is usually offered with a $10,000 limit. It can be used towards medical colic treatments other than surgery as well as colic surgery (in addition to the base colic surgery coverage automatically included with the mortality).

Worldwide Coverage extends the coverage area outside of the U.S. to horses living abroad, such as in Europe or Canada.

Transit Coverage extends the coverage to horses traveling to or from the U.S. to another country during their transportation. Horses being imported to the U.S., for example, need this endorsement to be covered during the flight.

Loss of Use reimburses you for a career-ending or career-limiting illness or injury to your horse, depending on the type of coverage chosen. A portion of your horse's mortality value would be paid to you in this event. Note that some carriers would require you to euthanize your horse (under the assumption that it can no longer life a health/happy life) or transfer ownership of your horse to the carrier in order to pay your claim. This coverage is also relatively expensive, so makes the most sense for high value horses. Additional vetting may be required in order to obtain this coverage.

Stallion Accident, Sickness, and Disease coverage is available to breeding stallions who can demonstrate a history of income. Should an accident, sickness, or disease affect the stallion's ability to progenate, the carrier would reimburse you for lost income up to the limit.
