  • Guided and self-guided tours offer opportunities to explore the museum’s exhibitions through close looking, discussion, and personal reflection. Guided tours are facilitated by museum educators, while self-guided visits allow groups to explore at their own pace.

    You will select the type of tour that best fits your group’s interests and learning goals:

    Highlights Tour
    A curated tour featuring key artworks and must-see pieces from the museum’s collection. Perfect for first-time visitors or groups looking for an overview of the museum.

    Current Exhibitions
    Explore the museum’s temporary and rotating exhibitions. Tours focus on the themes, artists, and stories of the current exhibitions on view.

    Thematic/Exhibition Focus
    Tours tailored to a specific theme or area of interest chosen by the group or guided by the museum. This option allows for deeper exploration of particular topics, art styles, or exhibition content.

    Pricing Structure

    • Youth (ages 17 & under): $10.00
    • Title I Youth: $7.00
    • Chaperones: $5.00
    • Adults: $18.00
    • Seniors: $15.00
  • Note: TAM is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Guided group tours can only be scheduled Wednesday-Friday.

      • Library passes: City and county library passes are not valid for guided or self-guided tour reservations.
      • Free youth tours: Individuals from Tacoma Public Schools, AMARA, and Coffee Oasis receive free tours thanks to our generous donors and sponsors.
      • Free higher education tours: Colleges, universities, and other post-secondary institutions in our MUSE program also receive tours at no cost.

    • Ideal for school-age youth (17 and under)

      Guided Tour (2 hours)
      Interactive, educator-led tours that encourage close looking, discussion, and critical thinking. Content is tailored to grade level and supports classroom learning. This tour also includes a hands-on art-making session.

      Self-Guided Tour
      Explore the museum at your own pace. Teachers and group leaders guide students through observation, discussion, and connections to the curriculum.

      Chaperones
      Children and youth must be accompanied by chaperones while at TAM. Required youth-to-chaperone ratios for all school tours:

      • Pre-K – 1st Grade: 5:1
      • 2nd – 8th Grade: 5:1
      • 9th – 12th Grade: 7:1

      For safety reasons, if your group does not meet the required ratio on the day of your visit, your group cannot be admitted into the Museum

    • How long do tours typically last?
      Most tours are 45–60 minutes. Hands-on art activities for youth tours may add extra time. However, it can be altered depending on the need

      What is the group size limit?
      We can accommodate groups of all sizes. For guided tours, we recommend 10–50 participants to ensure an engaging experience.

      Are there any free tour opportunities?
      Yes! Individuals from Tacoma Public Schools, AMARA, Coffee Oasis, and higher education institutions in our MUSE program receive free tours thanks to our generous donors and sponsors.

      Can library passes be used for tours?
      No. City and county library passes are not valid for guided or self-guided tour reservations.

      How do I pay for my tour?
      Payment options vary by group type. You can pay via invoice or credit card.

      Can we bring food or drinks into the museum?
      Outside food and drinks are not allowed in the galleries. Guests may consume items in the lobby café or 3rd floor atrium. For self-guided tours, a dedicated lunch space is available upon request.

      Can we bring large bags or backpacks?
      Large bags are allowed, but limited storage is available because they are not permitted in the galleries. We encourage visitors to bring only small personal items when possible to ensure a comfortable and safe gallery experience.

      Día de los Muertos Tours
      Please note that, before and during Día de los Muertos (late October – early November), the museum is not accepting guided tours to allow for event preparation. A self-guided Día de los Muertos-focused tour format is available from September through mid-October, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the art, culture, and traditions of this meaningful celebration at their own pace.

    Self-Guided and Guided tour are available Wednesdays - Fridays between 10:00am - 4:00 pm. Please choose three different dates that work for your group so we may best accommodate your tour.
