  • Your Role Description

    What is a Befriender/Mentor?

    A Befriender/Mentor is someone who makes a commitment to a young person, spending 2-3 hours a week with them.  This time is spent building relationships through activities that promote wellbeing, such as going for a walk or going on a trip to the cinema.  By doing this, you will help the young person develop confidence, resilience and communication skills, equipping them to lead a more fulfilled life.

     

    How long would I be doing this role for?

    Befrienders/Mentors commit to this role for a minimum of a year and their work is monitored, supported and supervised by COVEY staff in line with COVEY policies and procedures.

     

    What can I expect from COVEY?

    • Appropriate training and ongoing support to help you meet the responsibilities of your role as a Volunteer Befriender/Mentor 
    • To have a named member of staff who will provide you with support and contact you regularly to discuss your volunteering experience
    • To have a safe working environment in accordance with COVEY Health & Safety policy
    • To be covered by appropriate insurance whilst undertaking voluntary work approved and authorised by us
    • To be reimbursed for expenses incurred from your volunteering role
    • To have any problems, grievances or difficulties that arise in the course of your voluntary work dealt with in a fair and just manner
    • To be fully supported by staff with any risks and or concerns which may arise, inclusive of Child/Adult Protection, in line with our Safeguarding Policy and Process

     

    What does COVEY expect of me?

    • To perform your volunteering role to the best of your ability, offering relationship-based support to improve and sustain our young people’s wellbeing and help COVEY fulfil its service to vulnerable young people
    • To provide befriending/mentoring outings at the times agreed and to provide reasonable notice when this is not possible so that alternative arrangements can be made
    • To adhere to the organisation’s policies, procedures and standards
    • To advise Disclosure Scotland of any changes to personal circumstances such as change of name/address or if you stop volunteering
    • To treat all staff, volunteers and young people of COVEY with respect and to work in accordance with COVEY’s Equal Opportunities Policy
    • To attend additional training when/if required
    • To attend support meetings as agreed with your named member of staff
    • To raise with staff members any risks and or concerns which may arise, inclusive of Child/Adult Protection, in line with our Safeguarding Policy and Process.

    What is a Parent/Carer Mentor?

    A Parent/Carer Mentor is someone who makes a commitment to a Parent or Carer, spending 2-3 hours a week with them.  This time is spent building relationships through activities that promote wellbeing and help the Parent/Carer work towards their identified goals.  This may include attending our wellbeing walking group, being a listening ear over a coffee, attending a parenting skills workshop or taking part in a fun activity alongside the Parent/Carer.

    How long would I be doing this role for?

    Parent/Carer Mentors commit to this role for a minimum of a year and their work is monitored, supported and supervised by COVEY staff in line with COVEY policies and procedures.

     

    What can I expect from COVEY?

    • Appropriate training and ongoing support to help you meet the responsibilities of your role as a Volunteer Parent/Carer Mentor
    • To have a named member of staff who will provide you with support and contact you regularly to discuss your volunteering experience
    • To have a safe working environment in accordance with COVEY Health & Safety policy
    • To be covered by appropriate insurance whilst undertaking voluntary work approved and authorised by us
    • To be reimbursed for expenses incurred from your volunteering role

  • Expenses Payment Details

    COVEY will reimburse any expenses you incur due to your volunteering role. Please provide us with the account details you wish this to be paid into.

  • Media Consent Form

    COVEY regularly seeks opportunities to promote its work and showcase the positive impact its services have on children, young people and families. In order to do this effectively, COVEY uses photographs, videos and quotes from our participants and staff.

    In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and our policy, COVEY will not permit photographs, videos or quotes to be taken or recorded without consent. Participants aged 16 and over can fill in this consent form on their own behalf. However, if the participant is under 16, this must be completed by a parent/carer.

    COVEY will take all steps to ensure these images, videos and quotes are used solely for the purposes for which they are intended. The consent granted on this form can be retracted at any time by sending an email to office@coveybefriending.org.uk or calling our office on 01698 894013.
