  • What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide, also called "laughing gas," is a safe and commonly used sedative in pediatric dentistry. It is mixed with oxygen and breathed in through a small mask placed over your/your child's nose. Nitrous oxide helps patients relax, reduces anxiety, and increases comfort during dental treatment. You/your child will remain awake, able to talk, and responsive during the procedure.

    Benefits of Nitrous Oxide:

    • Helps reduce fear and anxiety
    • Encourages cooperation during treatment
    • Minimizes discomfort and gagging reflex
    • Effects wear off quickly after treatment ends

    Possible Side Effects and Risks:

While nitrous oxide is considered very safe, possible side effects may include:

    • Nausea or vomiting (especially if your child has eaten a large meal before treatment)
    • Headache or dizziness
    • Feeling light-headed, tingly, or warm
    • Rare allergic reactions

    Important Information for Patients:

    • Eating Before Treatment: To minimize the risk of nausea, please eat only a light meal or snack at least 2 hours before the appointment.
    • Medical Conditions: Please inform us if you/your child has any of the following:
      • Respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, congestion, sinus issues)
      • Recent ear or eye surgeries (gas bubble in eye)
    • Any other significant medical conditions or medications
    • Behavior: While nitrous oxide helps most patients relax, in some cases it may not be fully effective, especially for patients with extreme anxiety or certain behavioral conditions. In these cases, alternative behavior management or sedation options may be recommended.

    Alternatives to Nitrous Oxide:

    • Treatment without sedation
    • Referral to another provider for a different form of sedation (IV, General sedation)
