Last week, the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee heard a resolution urging SFPD to treat every 911 call about illegal drug activity near schools, parks, and playgrounds as the highest urgency, “Priority A”.
Supervisor Sherrill, who authored the resolution, put it bluntly: “Are we okay with drug use near playgrounds and schools, or not? If we’re not, then we need to say so.”
The committee voted to “continue to the call of the chair”. Hopefully, the resolution will pass committee shortly, and move to the full Board of Supervisors in September.
Here’s the catch: it’s only a resolution. That means it doesn’t require SFPD to change policy, but it does send a powerful message about what the people of San Francisco expect.
If Supervisors hear from enough of us, they’ll feel the pressure to make this more than a symbolic gesture.
Tell the Board of Supervisors: Back this resolution encouraging SFPD to treat these situations with appropriate urgency.
Because kids should be able to play at their local park and walk to school without encountering and normalizing open drug scenes.
