Join historian James Nevius (co-author of Inside the Apple: A Streetwise History of New York City and Footprints in New York) for an in-depth and slightly irreverent look at the HBO series The Gilded Age. As he’s done with previous seasons in partnership with The New York Historical, Nevius will explore which parts of this addictive soap opera are based on real people, events, and cultural touchstones, and which are pure fantasy.
Along the way we’ll discuss the scandals swirling around Gilded Age divorce, arranged marriages, the African heritage of Newport, Rhode Island, the railroad wars, and so much more. (While familiarity with The Gilded Age will help you understand the fictional characters involved, it’s not necessary to enjoy this talk.)
Tickets are $22 ($20 including fees) and include a recording of the talk, which will be emailed to all registrants approximately 24 hours after the presentation. PLEASE NOTE: The Zoom link only works for the live presentation on the day of the event. If you plan to watch the recording, look for a separate email with a link to Vimeo.
