Bro. Richard James Mansfield II, lovingly known as “Rick,” was born on November 1, 1962. From humble beginnings, he rose to become a man of vision, perseverance, and profound influence. While attending the University of Missouri–St. Louis, Brother Mansfield worked full-time while pursuing a full-time academic schedule—ultimately becoming the first in his immediate family to earn a four-year college degree. His journey exemplified the power of resilience and determination.
In Spring 1981, he was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. through the Alpha Eta Chapter as Captain of the S.S. Invictus X line. A dynamic leader, Brother Mansfield went on to serve as Chapter Vice President and was named Brother of the Year in 1983. But his contributions extended far beyond titles.
He was instrumental in launching Alpha Eta's inaugural Miss Black and Gold Pageant, a cherished tradition that continues to this day. He also co-founded the Midwest Marchdown, now one of the region’s most iconic and enduring step shows. These events were more than celebrations—they were visionary efforts to uplift culture, brotherhood, and academic excellence.
Outside the fraternity, Brother Mansfield excelled as a corporate executive, holding leadership positions at global giants such as Xerox, PepsiCo, Nestlé, and Starbucks. He also dedicated himself to service through board memberships in education and youth leadership, carrying Alpha’s mission of scholarship and service into every space he entered.
The Richard James Mansfield II Legacy Scholarship honors students who, like Brother Mansfield, embody academic determination, are first-generation college students, embody visionary leadership, and hold a commitment to uplifting their communities.
