Student Finance England can cover your tuition fees with a Tuition Fee Loan and may also provide a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs while you study in person. You only start repaying after your course if your income goes over £25,000 per year, and repayments are just 9% of anything you earn above that. For example, if you earn £26,000, you repay £90 per year. Repayments are taken automatically through your wages (PAYE), and if your income stays below the threshold, you don’t repay at all. After 40 years, any unpaid balance is wiped. It works more like a graduate tax than a traditional loan. The amount of Maintenance Loan you can get depends on your circumstances and is paid directly to your account in three instalments across the academic year, once you’re fully enrolled and the university confirms your attendance (usually 2–4 weeks after enrolment). Tuition fees are paid directly to the university. If you proceed, you’ll need to create your Student Finance account and get a reference number—we’ll guide you through the rest, but we can’t do it for you as it involves your personal details.
