    2026 Student Ambassador Leadership Class Application 

     

    The Mayor’s Fitness Council is looking for role models, positive influencers, leaders, idea creators, and change makers to empower their schools, peers, communities, and families to lead healthier lives!

    The mission of the Mayor's Fitness Council Student Ambassador Program is to involve San Antonio youth in the Mayor's initiative to improve the health of San Antonio.  As a student ambassador you will represent the Mayor's Fitness Council at your school campus, within your school district or in your surrounding community!

    As a Student Ambassador, you’ll get to:

    • Dream up a Health and Wellness Service Project Idea that is aimed at meeting a real need or issue.

    • Attend a Health I.Q. Training with public health, nutrition and mental wellness experts from San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and Organizations from the Greater San Antonio Community.

    • Build up your leadership toolbox and work on upskilling in areas such as of public speaking, research, service project management.

    • Attend Panel Presentations to present your health and wellness service project plan to Mayor's Fitness Council Student Mentors and later to San Antonio Community Members for feedback. 

    • Work towards making your health and wellness service project a reality at your school campus or in your community.

    • Be recognized and highlighted by Mayor Jones and San Antonio Metropolitan Health Director, Dr. Claude A. Jacob at the End of the Year Recognition Ceremony in May 2027.

    • Opportunities for continued leadership roles within the Student Ambassador Program once Student Ambassador term has been completed.

    Student Ambassador Time Commitment:

    For the 2026-2027 academic term, selected participants would serve in the program from January 2026 – May 2027.

    Typically, every month starting from January through May there is an activity that participants would need to take part in. Some of the activities may be virtual, but most will be in person. Most will take place on Saturday. We do not meet in June or July 2026 in observance of summer break.

    Parent/Guardian Involvement and Time Commitment:

    Students will need parent/guardian support and involvement. Please note this before applying. 

    Students will need to identify and ask a teacher or community member to serve as their campus mentor or community mentor depending on which setting they choose to focus their service project in school campus/district or in their surrounding community. 

    From time to time parent/guardians will need to make contact with the campus mentor or community mentor to touch base on the service project.  

    Students who are unable to drive themselves to trainings will need their parent/guardian to ensure that they can provide transportation.

    Campus or Community Mentor Involvement & Time Commitment:

    Students will need the support and involvement from a dedicated campus mentor or community mentor. As much as we lean on our student ambassadors, we've learned over the years that students with strong mentor support are those that typically have the best results and growth in the program. Please note this before applying and that having an identified mentor is required before applying.

    Students will need to identify and ask a teacher or community member to serve as their campus mentor or community mentor depending on which setting they choose to focus their health and wellness service project in such as at their school campus/district or in their surrounding community. 


    From time-to-time campus mentors or community mentors will need to make contact with the students' parent/guardians to touch base on the service project.  

    Student Ambassador Eligibility:

    • Students interested in applying for the Student Ambassador Program must attend a school in Bexar County, or if their campus is not in Bexar County it must be part of the 15 San Antonio Independent School Districts listed below:
    • Alamo Heights ISD
    • East Central ISD
    • Edgewood ISD
    • Ft. Sam Houston ISD
    • Harlandale ISD
    • Judson ISD
    • Lackland ISD
    • North East ISD
    • Northside ISD
    • Randolph Field ISD
    • San Antonio ISD
    • Somerset ISD
    • South San ISD
    • Southside ISD
    • Southwest ISD
    • Students from private, charter and home school networks may apply, however they must be in Bexar County.
    • Grades 6th – 10th are eligible to apply to be part of the program.
      Applicant must have an identified campus or community mentor who is willing to give of their time to work with the student on their service project.

    Selection Process:

    Application must be submitted by May 22, 2026. The Mayor's Fitness Council Healthy Schools Committee will select approximately 50 student ambassadors to participate in the Student Ambassador Leadership Class.  Applicant selection is based on 1) quality of completed application, 2) student essay, 3) campus or community mentor confirmation, and 4) representation from various Bexar County ISD's, Private and Charter Schools.

  • If my child is selected for this position, I understand that this will also require a high level of commitment and support from me to help to ensure the success of my child in the Mayor's Fitness Council Student Ambassador Program. I will support him/her by attending all required events and meetings and commit to the following:

    • Ensure transportation for my child to attend the Health IQ Training, Saturday Trainings and Workshops, and the End of Year Recognition Celebration throughout the academic term which will run from August 2026 - May 2027.

    • Attend occasional Saturday Workshops where Parent/Guardians are needed to attend.

    • Communicate and check in regularly with the campus mentor to ensure that my child is on track with their required service project.

    All applicants must have a campus or community mentor identified to work with them at their school campus or in their surrounding community based off their service project idea. A campus or community mentor is health champion at the school campus or in the community who is generally a teacher, coach, principal or school faculty that will check in with the student ambassador and guide/advise them throughout the required service project process. All campus mentors will receive a complimentary single YMCA membership from the YMCA of Greater San Antonio for their commitment and service to San Antonio's Healthy Leaders.
