Because the playground is located near a body of water in Maryland, we are limited to using materials that are natural, non-toxic, and environmentally safe. Other common surfaces like rubber, turf, or gravel are not permitted due to potential runoff and environmental impact on the nearby aquatic ecosystem.

Our only viable options under state guidelines are:

🌴 SAND
Pros:

✅ Natural appearance and feel, especially fitting for a beach environment
✅ Soft cushioning that reduces injury from falls
✅ Stays cool even in direct sunlight
✅ Encourages creative and sensory play (digging, building)
Cons:

❌ Can blow around in windy conditions and into the eyes
❌ Easily tracked into shoes, cars, and homes
❌ May harbor bacteria or animal waste (especially if cats use it as litter)
❌ Requires frequent cleaning and raking to maintain cleanliness
❌ Can become compacted over time and lose softness unless maintained

🌲 WOOD CHIPS (ENGINEERED MULCH)

Pros:

✅ Excellent for impact absorption and safety compliance
✅ Low maintenance and drains water well
✅ Less likely to harbor bacteria compared to sand
✅ Does not blow around or stick to clothing
✅ Deters animals (less appealing as litter)

Cons:

❌ Can cause splinters or discomfort when playing barefoot
❌ May shift or pile during play, requiring occasional redistribution
❌ Can be scattered into the surrounding area and require cleanup
❌ Warms up faster than sand in full sun
