  • Your child is invited to participate in the Community Writing Center (CWC) which, is supported by the High Point University Service Learning Program and Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

    Prior to participation, we ask for parent(s)/guardian(s) to review the following information:

    Children attending Penn Griffin Middle School, will be met by several Community Writing Center staff members at the end of the school day. The CWC staff will walk with the children to the afterschool program, which is located next door to the school at Mount Zion Baptist Church (MZBC) at 753 Washington Street, High Point, NC 27260. All online application forms MUST be filled out completely.

     

    • Your child will be working with students from the High Point University Service Learning and Bonner Leader Programs.
    • In addition to High Point University students, a supervising adult will be present at all times. All CWC Service Learners and Bonners will have background checks completed.
    • The CWC follows Safe Sanctuary policy. No adult will ever be alone with your child.
    • Your child will be provided a snack.
    • If using MZBC transportation, we will depart no later thant 6:30 PM* and load the MZBC bus, driven by CWC representative.: If using MZBC transportation, your child will be dropped off at the address you provided in your application (NO EXCEPTIONS) Once your child exits the bus, all supervision by and responsibilites of CWC volunteers and staff ends.
    • Individuals picking up children early from the CWC must be at least 18 years of age and present valid photo identification. Only individuals listed on your child's Emergency and Authorized Release Form will be allowed to pick up your child.

  • Middle School Student Application:

    The Community Writing Center in High Point runs Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday* from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm* in union with the Guilford County Schools and High Point University Academic Calendars. Students should come prepared to develop and strengthen their reading and writing abilities, as well as complete their assigned homework. The program will offer reading/writing group activities, creative writing activities and crafts, and homework help. Requirements: Must demonstrate academic need (for example: C or lower on report card, parents unable to help with homework, student below standard reading level, etc

    Must be able to attend the program at a minimum biweekly (preference given to those who can attend frequently) Due to current staffing and transportation, we also consider the address at which students are to be dropped off. Please note if you will be able to pick up your child from the Community Writing Center directly. Depending on the current student enrollment of the program, we may also consider the student's grade/age or financial adversity to maintain a balanced learning environment. Please note that preference is given to prior students, siblings of current students, and to those who have been on the waitlist the longest. Your child may have his or her work published in creative publications or research. Children will only be identified by first name in any publications.

  • The Community Writing Center is dedicated to the safety of students, staff, Bonners, and Service Learners who will be participating in programming during our 2024-2025 school year. As such, we will be following OSHA, CDC and Guilford County guidelines with the intent of sustaining trustworthy care and enjoyable programming for familial and professional constituents. The following will be practiced on site, with the possibility of enhancing or diminishing guidelines along with the everchanging efforts in the fight against COVID-19:
