  • Who was James Bayer?

James “Jim” Bayer (1938–1985) was a pioneering leader in sport and recreation in Nova Scotia and across Canada. Raised in Dartmouth, he excelled as an athlete, coach, and educator, beginning his career after graduating from the University of New Brunswick first physical education program. He served as a consultant for the Nova Scotia Department of Education, completed groundbreaking drowning-prevention research at Springfield College, and later became the founding Director of Operations for the Nova Scotia Department of Recreation. Recruited to Acadia University in 1977, he served as Dean and Director of Athletics during one of the university’s most successful eras and was widely respected as a mentor and colleague.

James volunteered with Recreation Nova Scotia’s predecessor organization, the Recreation Association of Nova Scotia as an instructor of Volunteer Training Workshops. The James Bayer Bursary was developed after James passing in honour of his contributions to Recreation in the province. The first bursary under the program was awarded in 1998.
