About Us
We believe that safe, dignified housing and transition care is a human right. Trans people, especially trans women of color, face the highest rates of domestic violence, housing and employment discrimination, and economic marginalization. Meanwhile, housing support services are inadequate for everyone and especially trans people who face transphobic violence. Everyday, members of our community step up to fill that gap by welcoming displaced and housing insecure people into our home---but rarely with the support system that makes it viable. Too often, this leads to burnout, strained relationships, and a return to the cycle of housing insecurity. Roundhouse breaks that cycle by collectivizing the work of care, shelter and restoration. We are capable of more together! Here are our areas of work and how you can be a part of breaking the cycle of trans housing insecurity.
Core Values
- Survival until liberation: housing insecurity, racism and transphobia are inherent features of white supremacist, colonial patriarchal capitalism. We will solve these problems by addressing its symptoms of poverty, housing insecurity, and exploitation, but we have a responsibility to help our people survive until a more just, liberatory world is created. By practicing radical care, we will build the networks and security to struggle toward that world.
- Anti-racism is the heart of anti-oppressive work: "race" and nationality are core axes of oppression and state violence. We prioritize the needs of our Black, Brown, and Indigenous trans siblings since they face the greatest degree of violence and insecurity. There can be no liberatory struggle without struggle for racial justice.
- Collectivizing care labor: domestic and care labor are just as demanding, important and valuable as paid labor in the formal economy. By sharing the load, we make this work sustainable. No contribution is too small to matter. You do not need to host or donate a major part of your income to play a role in trans survival.
- Mutual aid, not charity: we are not descending from the hill to provide alms. This is a community building and community defense effort. Our goal is to build an empowered, secure trans community where all are able to contribute towards the needs of others. That means someone who is a guest now might one day host or play another support role. It means that care travels in all directions, between supporters and guests, and guests and supporters.
