By choosing one of the groups below, you’re committing to a 2-month journey of learning to love God through community and connection—one of Discovery Church’s 5 Treasures.

These groups focus on building relationships, surrendering your heart, reflecting on your own life, and allowing Scripture to guide you toward deeper understanding and transformation. It’s important to choose a group where you feel understood and supported, while knowing your personal thoughts and experiences will be respected in confidence.

This journey is meant to fill your heart with God’s love and empower you to let it overflow into the lives of others.

 

Mike and Jan love creating a warm and welcoming space for people to grow in faith and community. They have two sweet Golden Retriever puppies, Sunny and Lexie — eight-month-old sisters who keep life lively and fun!

Jan enjoys making quilts and teaching others through the Prayer Quilt Ministry. She also loves cooking and opening their home for meals, fellowship, and meaningful conversations.

Mike has been in ministry for over 20 years with experience as both a pastor and Bible teacher. He’s passionate about teaching God’s Word and sharing the gospel with others. Mike is also retired from the fire service after an incredible 37-year career and enjoys photography and working in the yard in his free time.

Together, Mike and Jan are excited to lead a couples’ group where people can connect, build relationships, and grow spiritually.

Earle and Frances moved to the Hickory area about 16 years ago and have been part of Discovery since the very beginning. Both retired — Earle as a pastor and Frances as a teacher — they have poured their hearts into serving at Discovery and in the community.

Frances has led small groups, taught Bible studies, and organized meals for those in need. She’s also active in the Hickory community, teaching a Bible study at Safe Harbor, delivering Meals on Wheels, and tutoring Hispanic children in an after-school program. When she’s not serving, Frances enjoys pickleball (she’s known as the “Queen of Pickleball” at Discovery!), reading, and leading a thriving book club she started over 10 years ago. She also loves walking their sweet dog, Gretchen, heading to the NC mountains, and spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Earle, a retired pastor, has been equally dedicated to ministry, serving on the MLT, organizing men’s groups like Men’s Fraternity, and helping lead Discovery’s Ironmen ministry. He has a passion for connecting with men one-on-one and encouraging them to grow in their faith. In the community, he serves on the Carolina Caring Board of Directors and has previously served on the boards of the Hickory Soup Kitchen, Young Men of Integrity, and Safe Harbor’s Foundations Board. Earle also enjoys time with Gretchen, supporting the LR Bears, and investing in his children and grandchildren.

Chris and Kathy live in the Mt. View area of Hickory, not far from Mt. View Elementary School. They’ve been married for 31 years and are proud empty nesters! With three married daughters and five wonderful grandchildren, family time is a big part of their lives.

They love serving together, discipling others, and helping people grow in their faith. Chris and Kathy are passionate about building relationships and are excited to connect with new people as they walk alongside others in their spiritual journey.

Dori has a love for animals, including her rabbit Willamena and cat Lily. Since joining Discovery Church in May 2022, she has grown in her love for God’s Word and has been learning to play the piano for over 10 years. Dori enjoys connecting with others and sharing her passion for faith and community.

Scott and Nicole are excited to be part of Discovery Church in their new role and are passionate about helping others grow in their faith. They are proud parents of two adult children, Selah and Joseph. Scott, a former lead pastor, is grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside others who are seeking to grow in their journey of experiencing the love of God. Nicole shares his heart for building relationships and creating meaningful connections within the church community.

Together, they enjoy spending time with family and friends, sharing meals, and engaging in life-giving conversations. Scott and Nicole are deeply committed to helping others find belonging, deepen their relationship with God, and discover the richness of walking with Him in community.

Josh and Lily have been part of Discovery Church for the past nine years and love being actively involved in the life of the church. Together, they’re raising two energetic boys, ages 8 and 5, and this busy season of parenting is filled with laughter, learning, and leaning on God’s grace as they guide their sons to become Godly young men.

Beyond parenting, Josh and Lily’s passions meet at a unique crossroads. Josh is a pharmacist and owner of Bowman Drug in Conover, and Lily is on staff at Discovery Church. For them, the worlds of pharmacy and ministry come together in a shared desire to care for the whole person — helping people heal and grow, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Their heart is in building personal relationships rooted in care and trust and serving the community through wellness and discipleship.

Amanda, Jill, Kathleen, and Lisa are four women who share a heart for building community and helping others grow in their walk with God.

Amanda is a proud mom to two wonderful kids, Adam and Anna, and enjoys the adventure of homeschooling them. She loves exploring new places with her children, trying out new recipes, and cozy movie nights together. Recently, she even learned how to make sourdough bread and is excited to experiment with new recipes!

Jill finds joy in being outdoors, whether it’s hiking, biking, or simply soaking in God’s creation. Her quiet time with the Lord often starts in the morning, coffee in hand, watching the birds at her feeder. She loves long walks with friends and sharing stories of God’s work in her life. Jill works full time and treasures time with her three granddaughters — with another little one on the way!

Kathleen has a passion for helping others grow in their faith and find freedom in Christ. She is a recovering addict who is very familiar with the 12 steps and actively participates in a 12-step program where she also mentors other women. Her story is one of redemption and new life in Jesus, and she’s passionate about living out spiritual principles and helping others experience the same freedom.

Lisa serves faithfully in Discovery’s Kids Ministry and also works in the school system, where she invests in the lives of children and families. She brings warmth, care, and a love for helping others feel welcomed and connected.

Together, Amanda, Jill, Kathleen, and Lisa are passionate about creating a space where women can grow in faith, build lasting friendships, and experience God’s love in a deeper way.

Christian serves as a leader with Discovery’s Youth and Young Adults and also volunteers with the Kids Ministry. At just 19 years old, he’s actively involved in the church and has a heart for reaching others with the gospel. He loves to travel and is always excited for opportunities to share God’s Word wherever he goes.

Known by many as “Pawpaw,” Timmy works in plumbing and has a big heart for people and for the Lord. He’s passionate about inviting others to church, encouraging them to grow in their faith, and leading them into deeper worship. Timmy also helps lead the Young Adults Ministry and volunteers with the Youth Ministry at Discovery, pouring into the next generation. Outside of church, he’s a big movie enthusiast and loves spending time with friends and family. Timmy’s warm spirit and heart for connection make him a natural at building relationships and helping others feel at home.Chloe and Christian are passionate about building community, sharing God’s love, and helping others grow in their faith.

Together, Timmy and Christian are excited to create a welcoming space where young adults can grow in faith, build meaningful friendships, and walk boldly in their purpose.

Chad is passionate about walking alongside men as they pursue growth, truth, and strength in Christ. Chad’s heart is to see men rise up and lead boldly — in their faith, families, communities, and personal callings. he is excited to open his home to the group to be a space designed for real conversations, shared challenges, and solid biblical teaching that encourages spiritual growth

Bill grew up in upstate New York (just outside of Syracuse) and lived there his entire life until moving to Claremont with his wife on Halloween Day 2020. They attended their first Discovery service on Easter Sunday 2021 and have been connected ever since. Before relocating, Bill owned a painting business and now enjoys being semi-retired while still doing handyman work. He loves mission trips, hiking, and playing disc golf whenever possible.

Vincent enjoys building relationships and spending quality time with others. He loves games, sports, movies, going out to eat, and fellowship. Vincent has a passion for connecting with people and helping create a space where men can grow together in faith and friendship.

Together, Chad, Bill, and Vincent are excited to lead a group where men can find authentic community, encouragement, and spiritual growth as they take the next step in their walk with Christ.

Manning and Kerri live locally and love spending time outdoors, whether it’s hiking, exploring nature, or visiting the beach. High school sweethearts, they’ve built a beautiful life together with their two boys, Karson (8) and Kamden (6). Kerri is a high school teacher who is passionate about investing in her students, and Manning is a Physical Therapy Assistant, using his skills to help others recover and thrive.

Together, they have a heart for helping couples grow in their faith and strengthening their relationships. One of Manning’s favorite Bible verses is Joshua 1:9 — “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid; do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

 Mike and Sara have been married for almost six years (12/14/19), and this is the second marriage for each of them. Together, they have a blended family with five sons, ranging in age from 18 to 24. Their families were next-door neighbors growing up in the St. Stephens community, so they have known each other’s families for years.

They share their home with a few furry companions: Foxy the dog, Lynx the cat, and a new kitten they recently rescued — a reflection of their soft hearts and love for animals. Mike and Sara enjoy spending time outdoors, whether it’s hiking, camping, or relaxing at the beach, with Carolina Beach being their favorite getaway.

Although they previously attended another church and weren’t looking to change, they came to Discovery Church to hear Sara’s niece sing in the choir — and they haven’t left since! Mike and Sara are passionate about building community, growing in faith, and walking alongside others as they experience life and God together.

Vallie, Vincent, and Rose are excited to create a welcoming space for adults to build community, grow in their faith, and enjoy life together.

Vallie is a retired interior and exterior designer who loves cooking, flower gardening, and reading. She has a beautiful gift of hospitality and enjoys creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for others.

Vincent has a passion for fixing mechanical things, riding his motorcycle, and driving their Porsche Boxster. Together, Vallie and Vincent served in youth ministry for over 27 years and continue to pour into the next generation.

Rose is retired and volunteers regularly at Discovery, giving her time and heart to serve others. She enjoys walking, being outdoors, and spending time with her sweet 12½-year-old dog, Harley. Fun fact — she once worked as a flight attendant for 10 years with a regional carrier for Delta Airlines!

They’re excited to lead a mixed adults-only group and provide a space where friendships can grow, faith can deepen, and community can thrive.
