Technical Secretary Job Description

BACKGROUND. All national championships will have one or two technical secretaries assigned. A single technical secretary may be assigned to smaller national championships (e.g., Military Nationals). The Technical Committee will begin reviewing applications shortly after the September 28 deadline and official assignments will be made no later than October 24. Once the Technical Committee has made its selections, those recommendations will be sent to the Executive Director of USA Powerlifting for final approval. Upon receiving final approval of assignments, the chair of the Technical Committee will communicate with each applicant to let them know if they have been selected or not. Those who have been selected have the option to accept or decline the assignment. Prior to signing and submitting this application, it is critial to understand, review, and agree to the terms listed at the bottom of this application.

COMPENSATION. All national championships with 100 or more lifters will have the same compensation structure (all compensation covered by the meet director) for each technical secretary as follows:

• Travel costs (e.g., airfare, mileage) will be fully reimbursed.
• Hotel/lodging costs will be fully reimbursed.
• Meals will be provided (same meals referees are provided).
• Stipend of $200 for day before start of competition (Day-0)
• Stipend of $75 per platform per session (see explanation below).

The stipend of $75 per platform per session is what each technical secretary earns (regardless of the number of technical secretaries assigned). The same applies for the $200 Day-0 stipend. Example below:

• 4-day meet with 4 platforms and 2 sessions each day with 2 TSs assigned
  • [4 days] x [4 platforms] x [2 sessions] x [$75] = $2400
    • Each TS earns $2600 [$2400 + $200]

Note: National championships with fewer than 100 lifters are not subject to the compensation structure abovel; instead the following compensation structure applies:

• Travel costs (e.g., airfare, mileage) will be fully reimbursed.
• Hotel/lodging costs will be fully reimbursed.
• Meals will be provided (same meals referees are provided).
• Minimum stipend of $200

• I affirm that I have all of the requisite knowledge, experience, and personality traits to be a technical secretary including, but not limited to, the following:
  • mastery of the technical rules and referee responsibilities
  • exceptional organizational skills
  • highest level of professionalism
  • exceptional interpersonal communication and conflict management skills
• I understand that, as a technical secretary, I cannot have any other obligations/responsibilities for the duration of the event including, but not limited to, the following:
  • I cannot coach/handle any lifter(s) during the event
  • I cannot compete in the event
  • I cannot take any session(s) off during the event
  • I cannot serve as the meet director or co-meet director
• I understand that, as a technical secretary, I am required to be among the first meet officials (other than possibly the meet director or meet director’s staff) on-site at the beginning of each competition day (must arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to the start of weigh-ins/equipment check) and that I must remain in the venue until the last competition lift is completed.
• I understand that this application form must be submitted no later than September 28, 2026 in order to be given priority consideration/review by the Technical Committee.
• I understand and agree to the compensation structure described above.
• I understand that submission of this application does not guarantee that I will be selected as a 2027 national championship technical secretary.
