Memory & Story Submission Form for Mama Nonkululeko Creative Project
Nonkululeko Tyehemba (1942–2021) was an internationally recognized nurse-midwife, health activist, and women’s rights advocate whose work transformed maternal and reproductive health care in Harlem, across the United States, and internationally. She was the co-founder of the Harlem Birth Action Committee (HBAC), created to address the disproportionately high rates of maternal and infant mortality in Harlem. Under her leadership, HBAC became a pioneering force in reproductive justice, collaborating with New York State and other organizations to establish the Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Bronx Perinatal Networks. She was also the driving force behind Birth, Books, and Beyond, Harlem’s first Black women’s health bookstore and resource center, which for over a decade provided childbirth education, doula training, and parenting workshops. Please submit by Monday, September 22nd, 2025. (Sign a petition to honor black midwives with a USPS stamp here: bit.ly/stamp4midwives)
