    The RYA requires a valid SRC certificate and current First Aid certificate (please provide proof of certification, original copy or photocopy, to the Examiner at the time of the exam). Candidates are reminded that the RYA stipulates that for a VHF license to be eligible for the YM exam it must have a photo identifying the candidate. The RYA VHF and the Canadian ROC (MC) are both accepted.
  • Qualifying Passages

    Candidates must account for 50 days at sea covering a minimum of 2500nm of which 1250nm must have taken place in tidal waters or their equivalent (i.e. Great Lakes) in a vessel not greater than 500gt. Candidates must have completed at least 5 passages over 60nm in length, acting as skipper for at least 2 of those passages on a vessel or vessels which do not exceed 24m in length. 2 of the 60nm passages must be overnight.  Those candidates in possession of a YM for power may be able to reduce these requirements by half.  All Sea Time and qualifying passages must have taken place within 10 years of the exam date.
