  • Student Information

  • Types of robotics teams at SJIC:

    FIRST Lego League (FLL):

    • Open to ages 9-14
    • Focuses on designing and programming a LEGO robot to complete missions on a themed challenge mat, along with developing a research/innovation project to present to judges
    • Competitions are usually once or twice a season (fall/winter), with regional events leading to championships.
    • Learn more about FIRST.

    VEX Robotics:

    • Open to middle school through high school students
    • Uses metal parts, motors, sensors, and more advanced coding (Block, Python, C++).
    • Robots play head-to-head games on a field, with more emphasis on engineering design and strategy
    • Several competitions per season (fall through spring), building up to regional championships
    • Learn more about VEX

Please keep in mind that ANY robotics team at SJIC is a season-long commitment (Fall-late winter at least for FLL, Fall-Spring for VEX), unlike other classes at SJIC.

  • **NOTE: the next few questions are about your past experience, but don't worry if you are a complete beginner!! We value potential, enthusiasm, and desire to learn over knowledge. We just want to get an idea of where we're starting!
