Tuition fee refund and compassionate withdrawal application

Applications must be submitted within 12 months of the withdrawal date. If you have not withdrawn, they must be submitted within 12 months of the end of the study period in which the unit of study was or was to be undertaken.

Students should be aware that the AUT always recommends speaking with your home college Registrar or another academic advisor before making the decision to withdraw. There may be alternatives to withdrawing from a unit, such as applying for an assessment extension or getting more academic support, which your college can assist you with. Colleges can assist you in thinking through your options and what support is available.

If you were affected by special circumstances* that resulted in your withdrawal from a unit after the census date, you may be eligible for a tuition fee refund and compassionate withdrawal *CW grade(s) for the approved unit(s). To be eligible for tuition fee refund and compassionate withdrawal you must provide a personal statement explaining your circumstances and as much supporting documentation as possible.

*Special circumstances apply to the person if and only if the higher education provider receiving the application is satisfied that circumstances apply to the person that:

the circumstances are beyond the student’s control; and
do not make their full impact on the person until on or after the census date for the unit of study in question; and
make it impracticable for the person to complete the requirements for the unit in the period during which the person undertook, or was to undertake, the unit.
