More Art is a non-profit arts organization that fosters collaborations between artists and communities to create thought-provoking public art and educational programs that inspire social justice. This internship is located in Manhattan, NY.                                                                                     
PUBLIC ART Since 2004, More Art has worked with some of the world’s most celebrated artists including Joan Jonas, Pablo Helguera, Dread Scott, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Ernesto Pujol, and Andres Serrano, to produce a wide range of artworks in public spaces that reflect the concerns and challenges of various NYC communities. ENGAGING ARTISTS FELLOWSHIP Each year More Art selects a diverse cohort of NYC-based emerging artists to participate in a professional development program and public art commission that merges art with activism. More Art assists each fellow in developing a deeper understanding of socially-engaged art, while providing them with in-depth support as they jump-start long-term practices.

Intern Tasks (First Year):

● Assist in developing creative strategies for increasing engagement online and in person at events.
● Support staff for the Engaging Artists fellowship program (attend artist talks, workshops, document through photo/video, assist with logistics)
● Assist in planning our 2026 public art project by Alan Michelson, an artist, curator, writer, lecturer and Mohawk member of the Six Nations of the Grand River.

Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):

● Get hands-on experience organizing, promoting, and documenting dynamic public art projects across New York City.
● Assist in the editing and production of videos, photos, or audio for various platforms.
● Collaborate with artists and staff on media capture, storytelling, and promotional efforts.

Arts Gowanus
Description:

Arts Gowanus is a not-for-profit organization working to support, promote, and advocate for local artists and a sustainable arts community in Brooklyn. We nurture relationships among individual artists, arts organizations, local businesses, and the community. We produce open studio events, professional development workshops, public art works, artistic collaborations and exhibitions in our mission to ensure artists remain a crucial part of neighborhood identity. This internship is located in Brooklyn, NY.

Intern Tasks (First Year):

• Participate in curatorial and event planning meetings for community arts programming (including the Arts Gowanus annual gala and art auction)
• Get an in depth overview of the art world/business, artistic concepts, artistic aesthetics, and equitable art practices
• Assist with exhibition installation, event set-up, and attendance
• Create physical/digital promotional materials and distribute on the Arts Gowanus website, social media, and physical advertising

• Curate virtual exhibitions for Arts Gowanus members
• Spearhead communication with artists to update them on various event timelines and progress

Groundswell
Description:

Groundswell brings together artists, youth, and community organizations to use art as a tool for social change, for a more just and equitable world. Groundswell has painted over 600 community murals in 25+ years and each year we advance our mission by engaging 450+ young people, primarily ages 14 - 24, from communities around NYC in our public artmaking programs. Our projects beautify neighborhoods, engage youth in societal and personal transformation, and give expression to perspectives that are underrepresented in the public dialogue. All murals are based
on social justice issues that are important to the communities that we serve.

In-person at 540 President St. Suite 1A, although virtual accommodations can be made if need be
• Can be accessed by a 7-step staircase at the front door, to be let into the building you
can dial 1-0. There are no further stairs to access the Groundswell oMice, but elevators
are available in the building if needed.
• There are restrooms on the first floor of the building labeled “Men” & “Ladies”, students
have the right to use whatever restroom that most closely aligns with their gender
expression.

Groundswell programming runs Monday- Thursday between the hours 4-7pm. Groundswell staM can work directly with our intern to determine a schedule that works for the individual as well as the organization.

 

 

 

Media/Film/TV-based Internships

International Center of Photography

Description: The International Center of Photography is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Cornell Capa founded ICP in 1974 to champion “concerned photography”—socially and politically minded images that can educate and change the world. Through our exhibitions, education programs, community outreach, and public programs, ICP offers an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Museum of the Moving Image
Description: 

The Museum's mission is to advance the understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media. The Museum fulfills its mission in person and online through temporary and permanent exhibitions; film screenings; live conversations with artists, filmmakers, scholars, media educators, and other industry professionals; articles published in MoMI's online film magazine Reverse Shot and science and film resource Sloan Science & Film; access to the Museum's collection of more than 130,000 objects; and the online presentation of a range of films-including acclaimed new release features and award-winning science shorts, plus archived video of Museum events, and more. 

The Museum's Education department serves approximately 70,000 students each year, through guided tours of its exhibitions, educational screening programs, and hands-on workshops. The internship is located in New York (Astoria, Queens) NY.

Intern Tasks (First Year):

• Interns will work directly with both the Senior Manager of Art & Technology Programs (primary mentor) and the Musuem Videographer (secondary mentor), and have the opportunity to cultivate both technical and artistic abilities though their support in a variety of the museum Education Department's programming offerings, outlined below:
• MOMI Teen Council - Interns will extensively participate with the MOMI Teen Council, a job development program running from November to May, working with high school Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors to develop digital filmmaking skills, develop and run an original museum community engagement event, and produce the annual Teen Film Festival in the month of May.
• TDMI Media Game Labs - Interns will provide assistance in the operation of the museum's Media Game Labs - two museum spaces dedicated to accessible game design and digital media making activities in which they will they will have the opportunity to interface with museum visitors, facilitating the operation of computers, consoles, and cameras, as participants work with these technologies.
• Education Tech Library Maintenance - Interns will take on a leadership role in the maintenance and use of the Education department's extensive tech library, featuring both hardware and software associated with digital filmmaking and Game design; this will include organizational duties like cataloging, inventory, and data archival, as well as operational understanding of the equipment, through which they will learn to correctly operate a digital cinema camera, gain a simple understanding of basic programming, and establish the fundamentals of A/V setups.
• The internship may also include the opportunity to interact with and observe the work of other departments operated by museum professionals such as the Projectionists, Exhibitions, and Visitor Experience departments. 

Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):

Entering into the 2nd year of their internship with the museum, interns will work more extensively with the maintenance of the software and hardware associated with the MOMI Education department's programming, as well as direct media documentation and videography of such; they will work with editing software to help prepare media materials both for documentation as well as screening. Interns can also expect to continue in the following tasks: 

• Data archival and organization 
• Tech maintenance 
• Media documentation 
• Assistance with the operation of our Media Game Labs 
• Interfacing with museum visitors and students 

2nd year interns will also take on additional responsibility and a new team dynamic as they work with interns entering into their first year, and will be able to take the opportunity to share the practical knowledge and experience that they have acquired over the course of the first year of their internship with the junior intern as they collaborate in the maintenance of the MOMI Education tech and software library. 

Arts Engagement and Learning Opportunities:

Interns will have extensive opportunities throughout the duration of their internship to meet and work with a variety of visiting teaching artists from outside the MoMI institution framework, including filmmakers, actors, animators, programmers, game designers, and XR digital media artists. These teaching artists will work with the museum through a variety of capacities, especially to include teaching museum programming associated with the TDMI (Teen Digital Media Innovators) initiative, appearing in conjunction with special community engagement events, onsite film screenings, and internal staff seminars and workshops to enhance the museum's educational practice.

Schedule:

There will be availability for work hours at the museum Wednesday - Sunday, with a particular need on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The time that the interns' help will be required most is during the meeting sessions of the Museum of the Moving Image Teen Council Program: Wednesdays 4:00pm 6:00pm, and Saturdays 12:00pm - 2:00pm. This program will also involve a few special events on specific days, such as the annual Teen Film Festival, to be hosted at the must on a Friday in May 2025. During the summer, intern assistance will be required throughout the week, especially during the course of our Summer Media Camp Program, which is scheduled to run for 6 consecutive weeks throughout the summer, Monday through Friday in the Months of July and August.

 

 

Dance-based Internships

Dancewave

Description: 

Dancewave provides access to supportive and empowering dance experiences that center social, emotional and cognitive development through movement. Developing programs to meet community needs, we use dance as a vehicle for transformation, expression, active citizenship and self reflection. Dancewave fosters a culture where dance is celebrated as a healing and inclusive art form. This internship is located in Brooklyn, NY.

Intern Tasks (First Year):

• Dancewave's Nonprofit Arts Administration Internship Program offers hands-on, practical experience within a medium-sized, community-based organization in Brooklyn, NY.
• The program is customized to provide professional development in participants’ areas of interest, including:
  • Arts education
  • Business operations
  • Program management
  • Nonprofit development
• No prior dance experience is required.
• An interest in dance and working with youth populations is strongly preferred.

Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):

• Take on projects within Dancewave’s programs and operations.
• Mentor and support newer interns.
• Lead initiatives in areas of interest, such as arts education, event planning, program evaluation, or nonprofit development.

Martha Graham
Description:

The Martha Graham School provides teen dancers the opportunity to advance their dance training while expanding their understanding of dance and all the arts. The mission of the conservatory-based Young Artists Program is to further teens’ development using the Graham Technique and Repertory as a foundation for study. This internship is located in New York (Manhattan), NY.

Although we are a dance school, we can adjust your responsibilities to match your interests and career goals, whether that includes opportunities in performance, arts administration, education, or even specific projects like journalism, event planning, or marketing to help you gain relevant experience.

Intern Tasks (First Year):

• Take at least one Graham technique class per week with the option to also take New Work or ChoreoLab according to their interest in performing.
• Create content for the Young Artists Program (YAP) Instagram account.
• Assist YAP Program Director and YAP Coordinators with YAP programming.
• Perform various administrative tasks (filing, email correspondence, marketing
  and advertising, etc.)
• Teaching Assistant for 4-6 or 7-9 years old classes)
• Help prepare for the 2026 Summer Intensive and 2026-2027 School Year.

Paul Taylor Dance Company

Description:

The Taylor Center for Dance Education provides dance education to students of all ages. It functions in tandem with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, allowing young students, of the Taylor School, to be exposed to the highest form of dance through Mr. Taylor’s Repertory.  This internship is located in New York (Manhattan), NY.

Intern Tasks (First Year):

• Work on various administrative tasks with the Taylor School Manager, interacting with the Director of Education and other administrative staff. 
• Assist a lead teacher in youth dance classes. 
• Participate in educational programs offered during the three-week season of the Paul Taylor Dance Company at Lincoln Center in the fall.
• Assist with manual tasks needed around studios in both locations’ midtown and the lower east side.  
• Assist with keep files, and social media assets organized. 

Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):

• Support staff with various administrative tasks and research. 
• Support staff tasks at Lincoln Center performances (schedule permitting)
• Assist with students in our Summer Dance Camps, and help with administrative tasks in our Taylor Summer Intensive. There is a possibility to attend classes during these summer events, schedule permitting. 
• Conceptualize and teach dance combinations to students in youth classes.
• Organize outreach efforts to schools and families to regarding Youth classes at the Taylor School midtown and lower east side locations.

• Have the opportunity to work in a space and indirectly view Paul Taylor Dance Company rehearsals.
• Interact with teachers in the Youth Program, who are professional dancers.

In-person. This year the Taylor School will be expanding to two locations the intern will need to have excellent communication and organizational skills as the location may vary throughout the year.

Flexible. The Taylor School has classes during the evenings (Mondays –Friday) and on Saturdays. The intern will need to be available one of those days if they would like work in the classroom. Administrative work can be done in the afternoon/evening Tuesday – Thursday.

 

Theatre-based Internships

Epic Theatre Ensemble

Description:

Epic Theatre Ensemble is a professional producing and educational company dedicated to catalyzing dialogues about critical civic and ethical issues, fostering youth voice and empowerment, and advancing the causes of social justice that will bring a measure of equity to the communities of color we serve. Our education programs feature our professional ensemble of artists working directly in classrooms, in after-school writing and production programs, and in rigorous summer mentorships. This internship is located in various boroughs Bronx, and both upper (Harlem) and lower (SoHo) Manhattan.

• Assist in Epic’s High School Remix program at the City-Wide REMIX program, on Saturdays in upper Manhattan
• Take daily attendance of program participants
• Coordinate and update schedules with parents/guardians
• Take on the role of Peer Mentor and assist students with their writing and performance skills

• Become Assistant Program Manager for the Epic NEXT Summer Intensive
  Register youth, track timesheets, assign Mentors, determine schedules and room assignments for the Summer Intensive

The Possibility Project

Description:

The Possibility Project uses the performing arts to bring together NYC teenagers in diverse groups and empowers them to transform the negative forces in their lives and communities into positive action. The award-winning non-profit operates three in-person programs and one virtual program, producing three live original musical premieres and one podcast musical drama each year whose aim is to create a more just and peaceful world. This internship is located in New York (Manhattan), NY.

Afro Latin Jazz Alliance
Description:

The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) performs, educates about, and preserves the music of all of the Americas, emanating from African and indigenous roots, through the entry point of jazz. ALJA embraces its mission with a commitment to social justice, equity, inclusion, and the equality of all cultures worldwide. This internship is located in New York (Manhattan - Harlem), NY.

Description:

Building Beats is a non-profit organization that develops and expands DJ, music education, podcasting, & music coding programs that teach entrepreneurial, leadership, and life skills. We envision a world where any individual, regardless of their background, can pursue their passion and build a career out of it. This internship is located in Brooklyn, NY.

About your supervisor

Samuel Lee has been a Teaching Artist at Building Beats since 2016, where he teaches music production and audio engineering at various public schools and community centers in New York City. He has led over 20 residencies, contributing to the production of album releases, music videos, and showcases. In 2019, he was promoted to the role of Program Lead for the bbLeaders Program, where he helps students participate in weekly workshops and connect with opportunities in the music industry. bbLeaders Program

bbLeaders provides weekly workshops that focus on entrepreneurship, leadership, and life skills to help students become successful, creative professionals. These instructional sessions allow students to apply their learning in practice, building the skills they need to succeed in the music industry. Moreover, bbLeaders facilitates opportunities for students to connect with industry professionals through Q&A sessions, feedback sessions, and a series of workshops.

Duties & Responsibilities

During your internship, you will collaborate closely with Sam, the bbLeaders Program Lead, on a variety of tasks, projects, and deliverables. You will also have the opportunity to attend workshops offered through our bbLeaders Program, where you can participate in instructional learning activities. Communication and Coordination

• Update and maintain program tools, documents and resources
• Complete all forms related to feedback and assessment of programming

Live Radio Show

A monthly show that features DJ sets, interviews, discussions, original music and live/recorded performances:

• Participate in weekly workshops on Thursdays as part of our Frequency Society program to explore roles, responsibilities, and develop show segments
• Support the growth and execution of the radio show by collaborating with our student cohort and assisting wherever needed
• Help coordinate outreach to secure special guests for the show

Event Participation

• Engage new students at community partner events to support recruitment
• Support bbLeaders program students at DJ gigs for live sound events

We’ll run in-person programs at the Lower East Side Girls Club every Thursday and Friday (excluding holidays), with additional college readiness opportunities and a monthly radio show on other days. The schedule will be hybrid, combining remote and in-person meetings, workshops, and events.

Tuesdays - 4-5pm: Intern Check-in, Weekly check-in meeting to discuss programming updates, projects and address any questions or concerns you may have.

Thursdays - 4-6pm: Frequency Society, our radio show program offering students an opportunity to develop their own show on Newtown Radio while learning from industry professionals.

Fridays - 4-6pm: Creative Pathways, offers weekly workshops on music production, DJing, and business. 

Saturdays - TBD: Radio Show, The upcoming 5th season of our bbLeaders Radio will be live in-person at a new location potentially starting in October. More information on the schedule will be provided once confirmed.

Castellano’s House of Music
Description:

Castellano‘s House of Music is a family owned full-service music store located in Staten Island, New York. We offer private music lessons, repairs, rentals and sales. We host recitals, rock band camps, and various shows throughout the year. This internship is located in Staten Island, NY.

Intern Tasks (First Year):

• Assist in youth and teen music lessons with Castellano’s staff
• Help prepare students for upcoming music shows
• Conceptualize and post social media content
• Order and organize instruments and music equipment for the store’s inventory
• Interact with customers and facilitate store sales

Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):

• Assist students in learning music at summer Rock Band Camp and help them prepare for their show
• Perform alongside summer Rock Band Camp students
• Be assigned a budget to proactively order and merchandise musical instruments and accessories based on personal insight

Arts Engagement and Learning Opportunities:

• Perform alongside students in music shows/recitals
• Interact with music teachers, who are working artists
• Attend a music clinic, where professional musicians meet with customers/staff and discuss the music industry

Anticipated working conditions for Fall 2025- Spring 2026:

In-person.

Schedule:

Flexible. Preferable if the intern was available any weekday after 2PM.

National Jazz Museum in Harlem
Description:

Through exhibitions, education and public programming, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem creates opportunities for people of all backgrounds to experience Black music, learn about the artists that helped to shape and push music forward, and connect to the stories of Harlem and jazz. This internship is in New York (Manhattan - Harlem), NY.

Intern Tasks (First Year):

• Support the Community Engagement and Programming Team with events
• Work with public engagement staff to check in, greet, and support visitors as they enter the museum
• Help with equipment set-up
• Provide hospitality to musicians and presenters
• Support performers as an artist assistant

Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):

• Operate the sound board, cameras, and livestream equipment during events
• Manage sound check before performances
• Edit audio and video files

Arts Engagement and Learning Opportunities:

• Attend events hosted by National Jazz Museum in Harlem
• Interact with professional musicians, audio and video engineers, and production staff during events

Anticipated working conditions for Fall 2025- Spring 2026:

In-person.

Schedule:

Flexible. Intern would need to be available on one or both event days: Tuesdays and Thursdays. Interns would need to be available on event days until at least 7:30PM; 8:30PM preferable.
