The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) performs, educates about, and preserves the music of all of the Americas, emanating from African and indigenous roots, through the entry point of jazz. Intern Tasks (First Year):
- Observe and document Belongó school programs and residencies with the Director of Education
- Prepare music for performances
- Organize documents and files for record-keeping
- Assist with instrument inventory and distribution for education department
Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):
- See behind-the-scenes prep work for performances
- Assist with content development and marketing campaigns for education programs
Arts Engagement and Learning Opportunities:
- Attend rehearsals and performances of the Grammy Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra
- Meet musicians from the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and guest artists
- Practice with the Belongó student ensembles
- Receive lessons from Belongó teaching artists
- Assist the production team during events

Building Beats
Description:
Building Beats is a non-profit organization that develops and expands DJ, music education, podcasting, & music coding programs that teach entrepreneurial, leadership, and life skills. We envision a world where any individual, regardless of their background, can pursue their passion and build a career out of it. This internship is located in Brooklyn, NY.

About your supervisor
Samuel Lee has been a Teaching Artist at Building Beats since 2016, where he teaches music production and audio engineering at various public schools and community centers in New York City. He has led over 20 residencies, contributing to the production of album releases, music videos, and showcases. In 2019, he was promoted to the role of Program Lead for the bbLeaders Program, where he helps students participate in weekly workshops and connect with opportunities in the music industry. bbLeaders Program
bbLeaders provides weekly workshops that focus on entrepreneurship, leadership, and life skills to help students become successful, creative professionals. These instructional sessions allow students to apply their learning in practice, building the skills they need to succeed in the music industry. Moreover, bbLeaders facilitates opportunities for students to connect with industry professionals through Q&A sessions, feedback sessions, and a series of workshops.

Duties & Responsibilities
During your internship, you will collaborate closely with Sam, the bbLeaders Program Lead, on a variety of tasks, projects, and deliverables. You will also have the opportunity to attend workshops offered through our bbLeaders Program, where you can participate in instructional learning activities. Below is a list of some of the tasks you’ll be assigned.
Communication and Coordination
- Attend and facilitate meetings
- Manage emails and assist with outreach and recruitment
- Share updates and announcements in our Discord channels
- Report updates
- Schedule meetings with Sam and other interns to check in on task and project developments
bbLeaders Programming
- Support our weekly workshops taking place at Lower East Side Girls Club on Thursdays and Fridays focused on learning more about audio, DJing, podcasting and various creative industries
- Support on select Saturdays during our fall and spring programming for our monthly radio show
- Update and maintain program tools, documents and resources
- Complete all forms related to feedback and assessment of programming
Live Radio Show
A monthly show that features DJ sets, interviews, discussions, original music and live/recorded performances:
- Participate in weekly workshops on Thursdays as part of our Frequency Society program to explore roles, responsibilities, and develop show segments
- Support the growth and execution of the radio show by collaborating with our student cohort and assisting wherever needed
- Help coordinate outreach to secure special guests for the show
Event Participation
- Engage new students at community partner events to support recruitment
- Support bbLeaders program students at DJ gigs for live sound events
- Create social media content to support Building Beats events
- Attend and actively support Building Beats events, offering assistance to both guests and staff
Content & Web Design
- Create content for social media accounts
- Promote the program through various channels
- Manage and update Building Beats webpages
Additional Tasks:
- Develop contact databases to support program outreach
- Help support onboarding of new students
- Help to maintain Building Beats headquarters and equipment
Anticipated working conditions for Fall 2025-Spring 2026:
We’ll run in-person programs at the Lower East Side Girls Club every Thursday and Friday (excluding holidays), with additional college readiness opportunities and a monthly radio show on other days. The schedule will be hybrid, combining remote and in-person meetings, workshops, and events.
SCHEDULE
Monday - Wednesdays - TBD: Visits to colleges and field trips to music spaces.
Tuesdays - 4-5pm: Intern Check-in, Weekly check-in meeting to discuss programming updates, projects and address any questions or concerns you may have.
Thursdays - 4-6pm: Frequency Society, our radio show program offering students an opportunity to develop their own show on Newtown Radio while learning from industry professionals.
Fridays - 4-6pm: Creative Pathways, offers weekly workshops on music production, DJing, and business.
Saturdays - TBD: Radio Show, The upcoming 5th season of our bbLeaders Radio will be live in-person at a new location potentially starting in October. More information on the schedule will be provided once confirmed.
Castellano’s House of Music
Description:
Castellano‘s House of Music is a family owned full-service music store located in Staten Island, New York. We offer private music lessons, repairs, rentals and sales. We host recitals, rock band camps, and various shows throughout the year. This internship is located in Staten Island, NY.

Intern Tasks (First Year):
- Assist in youth and teen music lessons with Castellano’s staff
- Help prepare students for upcoming music shows
- Conceptualize and post social media content
- Order and organize instruments and music equipment for the store’s inventory
- Interact with customers and facilitate store sales
Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):
- Assist students in learning music at summer Rock Band Camp and help them prepare for their show
- Perform alongside summer Rock Band Camp students
- Be assigned a budget to proactively order and merchandise musical instruments and accessories based on personal insight
Arts Engagement and Learning Opportunities:
- Perform alongside students in music shows/recitals
- Interact with music teachers, who are working artists
- Attend a music clinic, where professional musicians meet with customers/staff and discuss the music industry

National Jazz Museum in Harlem
Description:
Through exhibitions, education and public programming, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem creates opportunities for people of all backgrounds to experience Black music, learn about the artists that helped to shape and push music forward, and connect to the stories of Harlem and jazz. This internship is in New York (Manhattan - Harlem), NY.

Intern Tasks (First Year):
- Support the Community Engagement and Programming Team with events
- Work with public engagement staff to check in, greet, and support visitors as they enter the museum
- Help with equipment set-up
- Provide hospitality to musicians and presenters
- Support performers as an artist assistant
Anticipated Intern Tasks (Summer & Second Year):
- Operate the sound board, cameras, and livestream equipment during events
- Manage sound check before performances
- Edit audio and video files
Arts Engagement and Learning Opportunities:
- Attend events hosted by National Jazz Museum in Harlem
- Interact with professional musicians, audio and video engineers, and production staff during events
Anticipated working conditions for Fall 2025- Spring 2026:
In-person.
Schedule:
Flexible. Intern would need to be available on one or both event days: Tuesdays and Thursdays. Interns would need to be available on event days until at least 7:30PM; 8:30PM preferable.
