In accord with Canon 874 of the Code of Canon Law a sponsor must meet the following criteria. Parents should verify that the sponsor meets all the criteria. If the sponsor does not meet any of these criteria, he or she is not elligible to serve as a sponsor for Confirmation.
- Not the parent of the person to be confirmed
- At least 16 years of age
- Has received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Eucharist and Confirmation in the Catholic Church
- If currently married, is validly married according to the norms of the Catholic Church (married in a Catholic Church by a Catholic priest or deacon unless a dispensation was granted for a wedding outside the Church)
- Attends Mass regularly on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation
- Tries to live according to the values of the Gospel and the teachings of the Catholic faith.
Qualities of a Confirmation Sponsor
- Disciple - a person who is willing to accept people as they are created. Open to discovering and nurturing the Confirmands gifts (charisms), walking with them in their faith journey, and establishing a sense of belonging to the Church community in the candidate.
- Prayer warrior - a person who prays daily and is open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
- Generous - a person who is generous with their time for the Confirmand, and gives freely of their own gifts, patience, prayer, understanding, love, and faith.
- Considerate - a person who respects the opinions, ideas, gifts, hopes, fears, and feelings of the Confirmand. Someone who recognizes the importance of confidentiality.
- Faithful - a person who is steadfast in constantly seeking a closer relationship with Jesus Christ while growing and living out their faith in their daily life.
