  • Is the primary trail type where the project is located registered by TCT as ''greenway'' in the summer months? (refer to - Trail Types and Definitions)
  • Is there known/illegal motorized use where the project is located, or is it considered ''undesignated greenway''? (refer to - Trail Types and Definitions)
  • Is the primary trail type where the project is located currently registered by TCT as ''mixed-use'' in the summer months? (refer to - Trail Types and Definitions)
  • Project requires a Trail type definition. You may continue conditionally with the application at this time.

  • An alternate non-motorized route study is required. You may continue conditionally with the application at this time with eligibility being determined once a study is completed and provided to TCT.

  • Is there an alternate motorized route possible that would maintain the connection of Trans Canada Trail?
  • Does the community support mixed-use on the Trail section where the project is located?
  • Has a community consultation process involving all users been conducted?
  • Was the decision to include mixed-use mandated from the trail owner/manager?
  • Was the decision to include mixed-use mandated from an outside authority? (e.g. municipality or government)
  • Is the Trail section where the project is located a designated part of a provincial cycling/hiking network? (e.g. Blue Route Nova Scotia, Route Verte)
  • A community consultation must be conducted in order for project to be eligible. You may continue on the condition that a community consultation is held and the results provided to TCT.

  • A safety and etiquette plan must be in place for project to be eligible. You may continue on the condition that a safety and etiquette plan is completed and submitted to TCT.

  • Is there a signage plan or is regulatory signage in place to enforce safety rules and etiquette?
  • A signage plan and/or regulatory signage must be in place for project to be eligible. You may continue on the condition that a signage plan is completed and submitted or proof of installed regulatory signage is provided to TCT.

  • Do local law enforcement and/or trail wardens play an active role in enforcing safety where the project is located?
  • A patrol/enforcement plan must be in place for project to be eligible. You may continue on the condition that a patrol/enforcement plan is completed and submitted to TCT.

  • Is this an emergency or natural disaster project that is essential to maintaining the connection of Trans Canada Trail?
  • Is the purpose of this project to resolve structural and/or drainage damage to the Trail caused by motorized use?
  • Unfortunately your project is not eligible at this time due to it has Trail section issues to be resolved.

  • Does/will this project meet minimum non-motorized standards? (e.g. for cycling, gravel bike can easily cycle it)
  • Trail section must meet minimum standards and/or address proper structure and drainage to be eligible. You may continue conditional on providing TCT with plans to meet minimum standards and/or to address trail structure and drainage.

  • Is the motorized community supporting this project through matching contributions?
  • The motorized community must provide matching contributions in order for project to be eligible. You may continue conditional on future proof that the motorized community will provide matching contributions is provided to TCT.

  • The tree planting location must have valid liability insurance. The insurance policy should also cover your volunteers if applicable. If it does not, the group must have liability coverage for the activity. Do you have liability insurance?*

  • Will this project involve planting at one site or multiple sites?

  • Which of the following does the project best address:*
  • Planting for Tomorrow funds native tree and shrub species (i.e. species that are native to Canada, not introduced, and not invasive). To assemble your species list, use our Native Tree Species List and our Native Plants & Shrubs Species List available on our website. If needed, we are happy to set up a meeting with you to discuss suitable species for your project - send an email to trees@tctrail.ca to arrange this. 

    Examples of native trees:

    Examples of introduced/non-native trees:

    • Norway Maple (Acer platanoides)
    • Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia)
    • Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)
    • Siberian Peashrub / Caragana (Caragana arborescens)
    • Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus bifrons)
    • Common Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) 
    • Honeysuckle species
  • Site and Planting Information

  • In the final report, you will be required to provide the following information for each planting site:

    • The history of the site
    • The land ownership type (as determined by the federal government)
    • The original use of the site prior to planting
    • The use of the site after planting
    • Whether the planting site is an agricultural shelterbelt or a similar farm feature
    • A description of site preparation activities, including site clearing, chemical treatments, and residue management
    • The percentage of living biomass present at the site before planting
    • Whether the site is considered habitat restoration for species at risk or other species of interest (excluding trees)
    • Whether the project contributes to increased forest resilience to climate change

  • Is this a diffuse planting? (Diffuse plantings are in urban or developed areas where the trees are being planted across the entire city/town/developed area, and not planted in a particular area, so no site information can be provided. Note that if the planting is in a developed area, but the trees are planted in a distinct patch within the developed area, please answer NO to this question.)*
  • Trans Canada Trail often receives requests from corporations looking for volunteer opportunities on the Trail for their staff. Would your group be interested in having corporate volunteers at your event?
