In the Waterloo Creek area, we will explore a rare, majestic old forest—one of the last mature stands of Grand-fir trees on the east side of Vancouver Island. This forest features some of the island’s largest Grand-firs, along with a massive Douglas-fir. Participants will learn about the three distinct ecosystems found here, their key tree species and plants, and why these are considered sensitive ecological areas.
This outing will involve off-trail bushwhacking. The route is mostly flat but expect thick brush, uneven ground, and occasional windfalls, with two short sections that require stepping off the path to reach the base of large trees. Sturdy footwear and good mobility are essential, and the walk is best suited for strong hikers who are comfortable navigating uncleared terrain.
The walk will be led by Dave Weaver, who worked in forestry for 37 years with organizations across BC. A Registered Professional Forester until his retirement in 2016, Dave developed innovative silviculture policies, taught applied ecology, and practiced low-impact forestry. Today, he continues to share his deep knowledge of BC’s forests through community education and conservation work.
