Tenant Power Toolkit Clinic Volunteer Sign-Up

Thank you for volunteering with ICLC’s Tenant Power Toolkit Clinic! Please use this form to select the clinic dates that work for you. Once you sign up, you’ll receive a confirmation email with training materials and a calendar invite for each of the dates you select below.
  • Backgroud: Many tenants face difficulties in even generating and filing answers in their eviction cases, a necessary step in avoiding default judgments and the loss of their homes.

The Tenant Power Toolkit, introduced in July 2022, is an online self-help resource that generates answers and related initial documents for tenants. Eligible tenants also qualify for e-filing by the legal admin team supporting the Toolkit. The Toolkit allows tenants to retain any defenses they may have, avoid a default, and provides much-needed time to find legal resources or other avenues to fight the eviction.

While meant for a lay audience, many tenants still report obstacles to utilizing the Toolkit in their case. The Eviction Response Workshop is an in-person clinic aimed at helping tenants overcome those obstacles and providing one-on-one assistance in navigating the Toolkit. Tenants who participate in the workshop will also receive general guidance on what to expect after filing an answer.

Role and responsibilities: We need volunteers to staff our Tenant Power Toolkit Clinic and: 1) assist tenants in using the Tenant Power Toolkit to generate an answer in their eviction case, and 2) provide general guidance on what tenants can expect after filing an answer. Tenants will not be receiving legal advice or specific guidance on their particular case.

Requirements: All volunteers who sign up for the workshop must attend a 1.5 hour virtual training on the Tenant Power Toolkit and workshop logistics prior to volunteering. Upon signing up for a clinic, volunteers will automatically receive a copy of our prerecorded training as well as the corresponding training materials.

Logistics: Volunteers should arrive 15 minutes prior to the 9:30 am or 4:00 pm workshop start time for prep and final instructions. Intake staff will assign attendees to volunteers based on language capacity. Each consultation with a tenant will last roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Location: Tuesday clinics are held at the Pico Union Branch Library located at 1030 S. Alvarado Street, Los Angeles, CA 90006.  Friday clinics are held at the L.A. Law Library located at 301 W. 1st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.  The address for each clinic is also contained in the calendar invite volunteers receive after signing up.

  • To ensure a smooth clinic experience for all, we kindly ask that volunteers avoid canceling within 24 hours of their scheduled shift except in cases of emergency.
