  • What are the Cook Shire Council Australia Day Awards?
    The Cook Shire Council Australia Day Awards were first introduced in 1991. The Awards are endorsed by Federal and State Governments in line with the National Australia Day Awards and recognise outstanding achievement within our community. Persons who have made a noteworthy contribution during the year, and/or have contributed outstanding service to the community over a number of years are eligible.


    When are the Awards presented and what do the winners receive?
    Award recipients will be presented with a trophy by the Mayor of Cook Shire Council. The presentation will take place on Tuesday 26 January 2027. 


    Who can be nominated?
    Nominees must be residents of Cook Shire who through their personal efforts have made a significant contribution to the community. Nominees must be Australian citizens. Sitting state and federal politicians, current vice-regal officers and current elected members of council are not eligible.

    • 1. Award Categories  
    • Citizen of the Year (Individual)

      Any person aged 26 years or over who has made a noteworthy contribution during the year and/or provided outstanding community service in any sphere. They will have made a significant and lasting contribution to the quality of the life of others through individual effort, philanthropy, advocacy or exemplary community service.

      Young Citizen of the Year (Individual)
      Any young person aged 15-25 who has made a noteworthy contribution during the year and/or provided outstanding community service in any sphere. They will have made a significant and lasting contribution to the quality of the life of others through individual effort, philanthropy, advocacy or exemplary community service.

      Volunteer of the Year (Individual or Group)
      Recognises an individual or group who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community through volunteering activities.

      Sports Award (Individual, Group or Event)
      Recognises the contributions to sport and the outstanding achievements of an individual, group, or event in their chosen sport during 2026 or over several years. This award considers all aspects of sportsmanship including performance, contribution to the advancement of the sport via participation or administration, acting as a good role model and encouraging participation and membership in sport.

      Arts and Culture Award (Individual, Group or Event)
      Recognises the outstanding achievement of an individual or group or the significant contribution an event has made to the arts, cultural and creative life of the region. This may include fields such as visual and performing arts, literature, food, crafts or cultural experiences.

      Environment Award (Individual)
      Recognises an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the environment in 2026. This award considers individuals who donate their time to an environmental cause or those who do not work in an environmental profession but still apply innovative concepts that contribute to a more sustainable environment.
