New HYTEs provides a free, long-term program for students from elementary school all the way through college admissions, combining academic support with tennis instruction and mentorship. New HYTEs serves primarily low-income students in the New Haven public schools. Students progress through our program, growing on and off the court, while New HYTEs staff and volunteers provide the support, guidance, and opportunities students need to succeed in school and beyond.
Students are a good match for our after-school program if they:
- Are interested in playing/learning tennis
- Want to grow their math and reading skills and are willing to spend after-school time working with a tutor
- Can meet our high expectations for behavior and sportsmanship
- Are able to attend regularly
Completing an application is not a guarantee of admission. Families are usually notified with two weeks of applying. For any new academic-year families, there is a trial period of a couple months to determine whether the program is a good fit for each student and vice versa. NOTE: The Elementary School Program is full for 2025-26. Any applications for students in elementary school will be placed on our waitlist.

Attendance Policy
The New HYTEs Academic Year Program runs from October through May. In order to best improve at tennis and academics, students should attend regularly. If a student reaches 5 absences in one semester, New HYTEs staff will have a conversation with the family. Further unexcused absences may result in the student's spot being offered to a student on the waitlist. Please contact us to discuss a short-term leave.
