• Let us know if you'd like to join the Rockland Symphony Orchestra

  • We frequently seek talented volunteer musicians for our orchestra who are:

    • Experienced in an orchestral setting
    • Collaborative, respectful, and willing to grow with us as musicians
    • Fully committed to our schedule, which currently includes a pre-season play-in, three yearly concerts, and at least three mandatory rehearsals before each concert

In order to assess your abiitilities, we ask that you submit a link to a web-based video (YouTube or Vimeo) of yourself alone playing your instrument. We recommend you perform an excerpt from an orchestral work, a movement from a concerto, or any relevant work that best demonstrates your abilities.

If you cannot provide a recording, or to supplement you submission, please provide a letter of reference from a representative whom we may contact, and who can vouch for your abilities and experience.

If you are selected for consideration, you will also be asked to sign a letter of commitment to our schedule of rehearsals and performances.

We appreciate your interest. Let's play together.

  • Other than to confirm your reference, we will not share the information you submit outside of the Rockland Symphony Orchestra.

  • Beginner  NYSSMA level 1 – 2
You can play simple pieces in basic keys with mostly stepwise motion and simple rhythms (quarter, half, and whole notes). You may need extra support with sightreading and playing in an ensemble but are eager to learn.

  • Intermediate  NYSSMA level 3 – 4
You have a solid foundation on your instrument. You can play in several key signatures, manage common rhythms (including dotted notes and eighths), and are developing good tone and intonation. You are comfortable sightreading at a moderate level and can follow a conductor in an ensemble setting.

  • Advanced  NYSSMA level 5 – 6
You are an experienced player who can perform advanced repertoire with confidence. You can handle challenging key signatures, shifting, complex rhythms, faster tempos, and expressive phrasing. You are a strong sightreader and reliable ensemble player who can adjust intonation, balance, and blend with others.

  • Professional  beyond NYSSMA level 6
You have conservatory-level or equivalent training, perhaps as a music major or active performer. You can play the most difficult orchestral repertoire with confidence and artistry, adjust quickly to new music, and contribute leadership within your section.

  • Please provide at least one of the following two demonstrations of your abilities.
