LEAGUE: St. Vincent de Paul participates in the Parochial Athletic League, a league made up primarily of other Catholic elementary/junior high schools.
TRYOUTS AND TEAM NUMBERS: Tryouts and evaluations for all grades will be held in late October/early November. Team selections are determined by the basketball commissioners with input from non-parent tryout evaluators and team coaches. Teams will have 8-12 players depending on the number of players registering. Every player who registers by October 10th will be placed on a team. We cannot guarantee a roster spot for those who register late.
PLAYER ELIGIBILITY: This program is open to all boys and girls in the 3rd through 8th grades who are enrolled in the St. Vincent de Paul Religious Education or Five Day School programs. Registered parishioners who attend home school are also eligible.
THIRD AND FOURTH GRADES: The teams will be divided as evenly as possible across all registered players. The PAL organization does not have competitive leagues in 3rd and 4th grades. 4th grade teams may be limited to one practice time per week due to gym availability. 3rd grade team practices cannot be assured but will be scheduled if space is available.
FIFTH, SIXTH, SEVENTH, AND EIGHTH GRADES: The teams will be selected based on tryouts. Boys' teams will be placed in the appropriate AAA, AA, A, or B leagues according to the number of teams and the team skill level. PAL divisions for girls' teams vary yearly based on registration numbers, with competitive and recreational levels at minimum for each grade. Placement of SVDP teams in girls' leagues will be determined based on registrations and review with coaches.
COMMITMENT TO AAA/AA (COMPETITIVE) TEAMS FOR 5th-8th GRADERS: Players who are selected for the AAA/AA (competitive) teams need to make this team a primary sports commitment during the season. Every player will be required to attend practices and games. If your child is considering participating on another team during the basketball season (basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, hockey, etc.), please keep in mind the commitment you have made to St. Vincent coaches and players. The AAA/AA teams may participate in other basketball leagues and/or tournaments besides the Parochial Athletic League games.
GAMES: Teams will play approximately eight to ten regular season games, starting in early December. At the end of the regular season, the teams will play in the Parochial Athletic League's post-season single elimination tournament. This tournament will end in mid- to late February. Some teams may decide to participate in other tournaments throughout the season.
PRACTICES: Teams will practice one to three times per week; coaches of each team make this decision working with the commissioner on scheduling. Due to the total number of teams in our program, practices will be held at outside gyms as well as the SVdP gym. Practices will begin in early November. Practices will not interfere with religious education classes.
REGISTRATION DATES AND COST: $75.00 per participant due by October 10. After October 10, registrations will only be accepted if space is available and the fee will be $85. Payment options and instructions will be found in sections that follow. Fees must be paid prior to tryouts, and no refunds after tryouts.
COACHING REQUIREMENTS: Parents indicating an interest in coaching must complete concussion awareness and safe environment training prior to the start of the season and provide evidence that training has been completed. Information regarding registering for upcoming Safe Environment training sessions is available on the parish and school websites.
