    Adobe Homes

People have been building adobe homes for thousands of years. Adobe is a material made of sand, water, and straw. The adobe can be shaped into bricks. The bricks harden in the sun and become great for building homes.

Adobe is a popular building material because it is durable. When a building is durable, it usually lasts for a long time. In fact, some of the oldest buildings in the world are adobe! Adobe is also popular because it keeps homes cool during the warm summer months. Adobe soaks up the outside heat slowly, which means that the inside of the house does not get too hot. Because adobe homes stay cool in warm weather, they are popular in areas with hot climates. Would you want to live in an adobe home during the summer?

"The Weather Explorers and the Wild Weather Week!"

One day, the Weather Explorers—Mia, Leo, and their dog Thunder—were playing outside when the sky suddenly grew dark.

“We better check the Weather Watcher Map!” said Mia.

The friends raced inside to their clubhouse and turned on their special weather screen. It showed something amazing... and a little scary.

    Monday: Tornado Trouble

A spinning cloud appeared on the map.

    “It’s a tornado!” shouted Leo.

Tornadoes are strong, spinning winds that can knock down trees and houses.

Everyone stayed inside and safe until the twister spun away.

    Tuesday: Blizzard Blast

The next day, snow fell and fell—so much they could hardly see! “It’s a blizzard,” said Mia. “A snowstorm with strong winds and lots of snow!”

They stayed warm inside, drank cocoa, and watched Thunder try to catch snowflakes through the window.

    Wednesday: Super Hot Drought

On Wednesday, the sun blazed in the sky, but there was no rain.

“It hasn’t rained in weeks,” said Leo. “That’s a drought!”

The grass turned brown and the flowers drooped.

“We need to save water,” said Mia. They turned off the hose and used a watering can instead.

Thursday: Lightning Lights Up the Sky

BOOM! A loud sound filled the air.

    “Lightning!” barked Thunder.

Flashes lit up the clouds, and thunder rumbled.

The Explorers stayed far away from windows and unplugged their devices.

    Friday: Hurricane Warning

The screen showed a giant spinning storm over the ocean.

    “It’s a hurricane!” said Leo.

Hurricanes bring strong winds and heavy rain.

The friends made an emergency kit with water, flashlights, and snacks—just in case.

    Saturday: Flood Fun (and Safety!)

After so much rain, water covered the streets.

“This is a flood,” said Mia. “The water has nowhere to go!”

The friends wore rain boots and helped put sandbags by the door to keep the clubhouse dry.

    Sunday: Sunny and Safe

Finally, the sun came out again.

“Wow,” said Leo. “We sure saw a lot of weather this week!”

“We stayed safe and learned so much,” said Mia.

    “Woof!” barked Thunder.

And with that, the Weather Explorers played under a bright rainbow and promised to always be weather-ready!
