    First Transcontinental Railroad

In the beginning of the 1800s, it took a long time to travel from the east side of the United States to the west side. People had to travel by wagon. Some people wanted a faster way. They wanted a railroad to connect the east and west.

In 1862, the United States government decided where the first railroad that would go across the country would be built. This was a transcontinental railroad. It was decided that two railroad companies would build the railroad. They were the Union Pacific and Central Pacific.

The Union Pacific started building the railroad from Nebraska and went west. More than 8,000 Irish, German, and Italian immigrants worked for the Union Pacific.

The Central Pacific started building the railroad from California and went east. More than 10,000 Chinese immigrants worked for the company. The Chinese workers made up about 90% of all Central Pacific Railroad workers.

Building the transcontinental railroad was very difficult. The air temperature was sometimes very hot or very cold. Railroad workers also had to put tracks across or through rivers and mountains.

On May 10, 1869, the railroad was completed. After it opened, the railroad was a success. People could travel between the two sides much faster. By 1900, four more transcontinental railroads were completed.

    Force and Motion

    "Max and Mia’s Motion Adventure!"

Max and Mia were best friends who loved building things—and today, they were making a race car out of cardboard and old wheels.

“Let’s learn how it moves!” said Mia. “Let’s talk about forces and motion!

    🛠 What Is Motion?

Max pushed the car a little.

“Look! It’s moving! That’s called motion,” said Max.

“Motion means something is going from one place to another.”

    💪 What Makes It Move?

“We need a force to make it go,” said Mia.

“A force is a push or a pull!”

She gave the car a push, and it zoomed forward.

    🛑 What Makes It Stop?

The car rolled and rolled… then slowed down and stopped.

“Why did it stop?” asked Max.

“That’s friction!” said Mia. “Friction is a force that slows things down. The ground rubs against the wheels!”

    🧲 A Pulling Force

Thunder, their dog, came running with a rope in his mouth.

“Let’s try a pull!” laughed Max.

Thunder tugged the car with the rope. It moved again!

“Pulling is a force too!” said Mia.

    💨 Fast or Slow?

Mia gave the car a tiny push—it moved slowly.

Max gave it a big push—it went fast!

“The harder the push, the faster it goes!” they said together.

    🎢 Up and Down

They pushed the car up a ramp, but it was hard to move.

“It needs a big force to go up,” said Mia.

Then they let it roll down the ramp. “It moves fast going down!” Max shouted.

    🏁 Ready, Set, Zoom!

After testing and learning, Max and Mia were ready.

“Let’s race our car!” They pushed it together with just the right force—and off it zoomed across the driveway!

“Science makes playtime even more fun!” said Max.

    The End!
