    Saving Salamanders

Have you ever seen a salamander? Salamanders are amphibians, like frogs and toads. They are shaped like lizards. But their skin is like a frog's skin. Like all amphibians, they need to be in or near water to survive. Salamanders usually live under rocks and logs near rivers, streams, and ponds. They like cool water shaded by nearby trees.

The biggest salamander in North America is called the hellbender. The hellbender can grow up to two feet long! Hellbenders are usually olive-gray, brown, or black. They have wide, flat heads.

Most salamander babies hatch from eggs in the water. Male hellbenders build nests to attract females. The female hellbenders lay eggs in the nest. Then, the males guard the eggs. These animals are important to rivers and streams. They help people know if rivers and streams are clean and healthy. If water gets too polluted or too warm, the hellbenders leave or die.

People worry when they can't find hellbenders in rivers or streams. If the hellbenders are gone, people realize the water is too dirty or too warm. Warm, dirty water will cause other animals to leave or die, too. People can't enjoy the water, either.

People are working to take care of rivers and streams to help the environment for salamanders and other animals. People are planting more trees near rivers, streams, and ponds. This helps keep the water shaded and cooler. People are also cleaning up litter. This helps keep the water clean. These activities will help all the animals that live near the ponds and streams, especially the hellbender salamander.

These conservation efforts are supported by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), which specializes in bringing together individuals, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and corporations to restore our nation's fish, wildlife, plants, and habitats for current and future generations.

     Solar System

    🌞 Our Solar System!

Let's explore the 8 amazing planets that go around the Sun!

The Sun is a big ball of hot gas in the middle of our solar system. The planets go around it in a big circle. Let’s meet them!

    🟤 Mercury

    ● Closest planet to the Sun

    ● Very hot during the day and very cold at night

    ● Has lots of craters like the Moon

    🟠 Venus

    ● Very, very hot—even hotter than Mercury!

    ● Covered in thick clouds

    ● Called Earth’s "sister" planet

    🌍 Earth

    ● Our home planet!

    ● Has air, water, and life

    ● The only planet we know with people and animals

    🔴 Mars

    ● Known as the “Red Planet”

    ● Has the tallest volcano in the solar system

    ● Scientists think it might have had water long ago

    🟡 Jupiter

    ● The biggest planet!

    ● Has a giant red storm (called the Great Red Spot)

    ● Made of gas and has lots of moons

    🔵 Saturn

    ● Famous for its beautiful rings

    ● Made of gas, just like Jupiter

    ● Can float in water (if you had a giant bathtub!)

    💙 Uranus

    ● Spins on its side like a rolling ball

    ● Light blue color

    ● Has faint rings and is made of gas and ice

    💜 Neptune

    ● The farthest planet from the Sun

    ● Deep blue and very windy

    ● Takes a long time to go around the Sun

    🚀 Fun Planet Facts!

🪐 All planets orbit (go around) the Sun.

🌠 Some planets are rocky, and some are made of gas.
