The Monologue Slam is HFTco’s performance competition where Hamilton’s finest emerging and established actors share their talent AND their process. Audiences get a behind-the-scenes glimpse as the performers adjust to feedback from industry professionals in real time, revealing what collaboration with a director really looks like.

Don’t miss out on the chance to showcase your work in front of a panel of theatre professionals, perform for a live audience, and vie for the slam championship title!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

If you are selected to perform as a Monologue Slam participant, you will take part in two rounds of performances on the night of the competition (Oct. 5, 2025).

In round one, performers present a monologue of no more than 3 minutes in length and receive feedback from the Monologue Slam panel. The panel then chooses three performers to compete in Round 2, where they have an opportunity to incorporate the panel’s feedback and perform their monologues again.

The panel will select three performers to advance to round two, where performers will have an opportunity to incorporate their feedback and perform their monologues again.

Audience members then vote to decide which of the final three performers will be crowned Hamilton’s 2025 Monologue Slam Champion!

Note: the selection panel (reviewing applications) and the performance panel (adjudicating at the event) are different groups. This year's performance panel includes Mary Francis Moore and Donna-Michelle St. Bernard.
APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
1. Fill out the application below and submit this form before 11:59pm ET on September 22, 2025. Applicants must pay a $15 non-refundable application fee to cover associated administration and adjudication costs.
2. Monologue Slam participants will be chosen from among the applicants by the HFTco selection committee.
3. Selected applicants will be notfified no later than October 2, 2025.
4. Selected applicants must confirm their participation in The Monologue Slam within 24 hours of receving notification.
5. The Monologue Slam takes place on Sunday October 5, 2025 at 7 PM. Performers will be asked to arrive at 6 PM.
VENUE INFORMATION

The Monologue Slam will be held on Sunday, October 5 at 7 PM at the Theatre Aquarius Studio (190 King William St, Hamilton). The venue is fully accessible for audience members and performers. Performers will not be amplified or have access to set pieces or props (unless required for accessibility). Detailed venue information is available at HFTco.ca/venues/theatre-aquarius-studio/.

ABOUT STAGE DIRECTIONS 2025

The Monologue Slam is part of Stage Directions 2025, presented by HFTco in partnership with Theatre Aquarius and Players' Guild of Hamilton. Taking place Oct 4 & 5, Stage Directions is two days of strategy, connection, and skills-building for Hamilton theatre and performance makers. Application Fee and Submission
Application Fee

There is a $15.00 non-refundable application fee due upon receipt of your Monologue Slam submission form. This fee will be used to grant you FREE ACCESS to the Monologue Slam event, regardless of whether you are selected as a performer.

Your full application fee must be submitted along with your completed application or received within the specified number of days of submission if paying by cheque or e-transfer. Applications will not be considered complete until the application fee is processed. If you choose to pay by cheque, please enclose a PRINTED copy of your mailed application form. If paying by e-transfer, include the competitor's name in the MEMO field.

You must choose one of the following 3 payment methods to pay your $15 application fee:

- PayPal: pay now via this form

- Interac E-transfer: send $15 CAD to info@HFTco.ca within 2 days of your submission, and the competitor's name in the memo field

- Cheque: send a cheque for $15 CAD along with a copy of your application payable to Hamilton Festival Theatre Company. Mailing address 41 King William St, Suite 206, Hamilton, ON, L8R 1A2 Do not mail cash.
