  • Instructions

Criteria/rating scales for your evaluations, showing the frequency the skill or value was demonstrated, are as follows:

Emerging: Below 40% of the time; rarely
Growing: 40-60% of the time; sometimes
Solid: 60-80% of the time; often
Accomplished: 80-95% of the time; usually
Outstanding: 95-100% of the time; nearly or always

Use the descriptors below for each element as a guide. Make your choice for the student’s level based on what you are comfortable evaluating. You do not have to evaluate all aspects of each descriptor. You do have to evaluate each criterion.

  • Acting/Storytelling

Examining acting technique and storytelling abilities

Honest emotions & believability: Did the actor deliver a truthful, emotionally connected character in every scene?
Consistency of character: Providing and maintaining character through physical, vocal, and emotional means
Stakes & motivation: What's at stake animates the character, creates resolve, and drives the performance.
Discoveries, events & changes: Character takes in new information, responds, and deals with/adjusts to any change. These are steps of growth or downfall.
Relationships & conflict: Using eye contact, relative position, attitude, other physical cues to embody authentic interactions and conflicts
Specificity of choices: Deeper, more nuanced reactions, with surprises, details, and layers of (possibly opposing) emotions
Character voice, diction & clarity: Voice and any accent fits the character; lines were clear and easily understood.
Character journey/arc: Believable journey for the character from start to finish

  • Artistry

Artistry is the assemblage of all the crafts, how well the actor put all the pieces together: acting, singing, movement — all in service to the story. This is the sum of the parts.

Your choices here can be very different than those made above. This is how close the student got to creating art.

Stage presence: Comfort level being on stage before an audience
Unified performance: Connects the skills of musical theatre into a smooth, cohesive performance
Connection with audience: Performer engages and holds the audience’s attention.
Creativity: Created an interesting and unique character, bringing something of themselves to it
"It" factor: Captivating; a special spark, charisma, or unique quality
