Adventures in Story Quilts: Crossing Mountains

There are many different ways to tell a story. Some stories use words. Some stories use pictures. Sometimes, a story can be told in a quilt! A quilt is like a blanket. A quilt has designs sewn on it. Story quilts are quilts that tell a story through pictures. This story quilt is called “Crossing Mountains.”

Crossing a mountain is an adventure. Look at the top left corner of the quilt. Do you see a person walking over a mountain? This is where the person’s adventure starts. This quilt tells the story of one person crossing mountains. The character finds many problems on their adventure.

What do you see in this quilt? Can you find the wolf? Do you see the birds? What would you do if you saw them on an adventure?

    Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart was born in 1897. Back then, airplanes were new. Flying was not as safe as it is today. Planes were not built very well. Sometimes planes would break and crash. And it was easy to get lost. Every flight was dangerous!

Even though flying could be scary, it was also exciting! When Amelia Earhart was 23 years old, she rode in a plane for the first time. She loved it! Amelia Earhart decided to become a pilot right away. A pilot is a person who flies airplanes.

Back then, most pilots were men. Many people did not think women could be pilots. But Amelia Earhart knew they were wrong. She wanted to show that women could be great pilots, too!

Amelia Earhart decided to fly across the Atlantic Ocean by herself. She flew for 15 hours. At the end of the flight, her plane leaked gas, and a fire started! She had to quickly land to put out the fire. But she had made it! Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly a plane across the Atlantic Ocean alone.
