Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez was born in Arizona. When he was 11, his family moved to California. Many people in his family were farm workers. Farm workers pick fruits, vegetables, and other plants on farms. It was very hard work. And farm workers were not treated well. They were not paid much money. They did not have bathrooms or drinking water at work.
Cesar had a hard time in school. His family moved a lot to find work. So, he needed to change schools more than 30 times! Also, Cesar spoke Spanish at home. But his teachers got mad when he spoke Spanish at school. They made him speak English. It was hard to use a different language at school.
One day, Cesar's father got hurt. He could not work anymore. Cesar's family needed money. So, Cesar had to stop going to school when he was 15 years old. He became a farm worker to help his family.
When Cesar Chavez grew up, he wanted to help farm workers. He knew they were not being treated fairly. So Cesar started a union for farm workers. In a union, many people can work together to make things better. Unions can help workers make more money. They can help make people's jobs safer.
