    A Map of the Sky

Long ago, people looked up at the stars. They wondered: what are those faSr-away lights?

The Pawnee people did more than wonder. They made maps of the sky!

The Pawnee are a Native American nation. Today, Pawnee people live all over the United States and in other countries. Many Pawnee people live in Oklahoma. They live on their reservation. Their reservation is the land that belongs to the Pawnees.

Long ago, most Pawnees lived in what is now Nebraska. They were smart astronomers. They knew the difference between stars and planets. They watched the night sky carefully. They studied where stars were in the sky. Based on that, they chose when to plant their crops and where to build their homes.

The Pawnees made maps of the night sky. Their star maps are famous. One map is more than 300 years old. It was made on animal skin. The map shows dim stars and bright stars. It has a special mark for the brightest star. The Pawnees believed it was the ruler of the star world. Today, a lot of people call it the North Star.

    Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez was born in Arizona. When he was 11, his family moved to California. Many people in his family were farm workers. Farm workers pick fruits, vegetables, and other plants on farms. It was very hard work. And farm workers were not treated well. They were not paid much money. They did not have bathrooms or drinking water at work.

Cesar had a hard time in school. His family moved a lot to find work. So, he needed to change schools more than 30 times! Also, Cesar spoke Spanish at home. But his teachers got mad when he spoke Spanish at school. They made him speak English. It was hard to use a different language at school.

One day, Cesar's father got hurt. He could not work anymore. Cesar's family needed money. So, Cesar had to stop going to school when he was 15 years old. He became a farm worker to help his family.

When Cesar Chavez grew up, he wanted to help farm workers. He knew they were not being treated fairly. So Cesar started a union for farm workers. In a union, many people can work together to make things better. Unions can help workers make more money. They can help make people's jobs safer.
