Mary Isabella Pharazyn (nee Bollinger) Scholarship
  • This scholarship commemorates the life and work of Mary Isabella Pharazyn (nee Bollinger) who lived in Havelock North from 1961 until her death aged 52 in 1978. She had trained as a Playcentre Supervisor between 1957 and 1961 in the Wellington region, and on moving to Havelock North she was asked by the New Zealand Nursery Playcentre Association to facilitate the training of other parents in Hawke's Bay and on the East Coast, in working with their children as early childhood educators in the co-operative and supportive environment that the Playcentre movement promoted.

She had particular and ongoing relationships with the Nursery Playcentres at Havelock North, Haumoana and Omakere. Pharazyn (nee Bollinger) made lifelong friends among the mothers she worked with and other Playcentres throughout the region as well as the Hawke's Bay Regional Nursery Playcentre Association.

All those involved with Nursery Playcentres gave their time without payment, working and learning with their own and other people’s children, but she saw that the days of such voluntary involvement were numbered. This scholarship honours both the legacy of her own work amongst the families of the region, and the need she foresaw for financial support for excellence in training to work in early childhood education.

    Objectives of the scholarship
    To encourage consistent academic achievement
    To recognise contribution to community
To encourage learning at all stages of life
    To encourage completion of studies
    To diminish barriers to learning

    Awarding of the scholarship
