North America Comparing Data from Different Countries Around the World

Charts are a helpful way to look at information, or data, quickly and easily. They take numbers and facts and organize them. That way, people can look for patterns in the data and make comparisons. By reading charts, people can understand important details without having to read a lot of words.

This chart shows facts about different countries around the world. Most of this data is from 2024. It compares the total size of each country, how many people live there, the average life expectancy (or how long people are expected to live), how much of each country is covered by forests and water, and more. By looking at these details, people can learn more about what makes each country unique. They can also see some of the similarities and differences between them. For example, take a look at the population growth rate in the chart below. Do you notice anything different about Japan’s growth rate versus the other countries on the chart? Its population is decreasing, while Canada, USA, and UK’s population is increasing. What else can you find out by looking at this chart?

    Immigration to America

For hundreds of years, people from all over the world have come to the United States to build a better life. These people are called immigrants. Many left their home countries because of war, hunger, or a lack of jobs. Others came for freedom, safety, or the chance to go to school and work. Immigrants brought their languages, foods, music, and traditions, adding to the rich culture of America.

One important place in immigration history is Ellis Island, located in New York Harbor. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, millions of immigrants passed through Ellis Island when they arrived in America by ship. There, they were checked by doctors and asked questions before being allowed to enter the country. For many families, Ellis Island was the first step toward a new life. Immigration has helped shape the United States and continues to be an important part of its story.

    Animal Adaptations

Animals have special features and behaviors that help them survive in their environments. These features are called adaptations. Adaptations help animals find food, stay safe, and live in different climates.

There are two main types of adaptations: physical adaptations and behavioral adaptations. Physical adaptations are body parts or coverings, like the thick fur of a polar bear to stay warm or the long neck of a giraffe to reach leaves high in trees. Camouflage is another physical adaptation that helps animals blend into their surroundings to hide from predators.

Behavioral adaptations are actions animals do to survive. For example, birds migrating to warmer places during winter is a behavioral adaptation. Other examples include bears hibernating during cold months and some animals being active only at night to avoid heat.

Different animals have different adaptations depending on where they live. Desert animals, like camels, store water and have long eyelashes to keep sand out of their eyes. Animals in the ocean may have fins or flippers to help them swim.

Adaptations take many years to develop and are passed down from parents to offspring. They help animals live and thrive in their habitats.
