    Home-delivered meal service is considered in-home health care by the State of Texas. Meals on Wheels of Odessa maintains contracts with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, and we are required to perform background screening on all staff and volunteers prior to their first day of service.

    To protect the safety and well-being of our vulnerable clients, MOWO requires all prospective volunteers to undergo the following verification and background checks:

    • Valid Driver's License Verification (for volunteer drivers)
    • Criminal Background History Check
    • Texas HHSC Nurse Aide Registry
    • Texas HHSC Employee Misconduct Registry
    • National Sex Offender Registry Check

    Each background check produces a separate result, recorded as either passed or not passed. An applicant must pass all required checks before being approved to proceed with volunteer onboarding.

    While the existence of a criminal record does not automatically disqualify an applicant, the following convictions are disqualifying for any volunteer role with MOWO:

    • Crimes involving violence toward a person or animal: assault, domestic violence, rape, cruelty, and similar offenses
    • Weapons-related offenses
    • Theft of any kind, including identity theft and monetary theft
    • Drug-related offenses involving distribution or sales
    • Crimes against children, elderly, or disabled persons
    • Sex offenses requiring registration
    • Fraud or financial exploitation of vulnerable persons

    Other convictions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, considering the nature of the offense, the time elapsed, and the relevance to the volunteer role.

  • I agree that in my capacity as a Meals on Wheels of Odessa (MOWO) volunteer, I will not provide medical advice to clients under any circumstances. I understand that any client I find in medical distress I will dial 911 immediately. I further agree to maintain appropriate professional boundaries by refraining from initiating or engaging in discussions regarding religious beliefs or political views with MOWO clients during the course of my volunteer service.*

If I am unable to fulfill a scheduled commitment, I will notify MOWO as far in advance as reasonably possible so that alternative arrangements can be made.*

    During my volunteer service with Meals on Wheels of Odessa, I may be photographed, video recorded, or audio recorded by MOWO staff, contractors, board members, or authorized media representatives.

    These images and recordings may be used by MOWO for:

    • Website, social media, and newsletters
    • Annual reports, fundraising appeals, and donor communications
    • Press releases and news media coverage
    • Marketing, presentations, and educational content

    I grant Meals on Wheels of Odessa the irrevocable and unrestricted right to use, reproduce, edit, publish, distribute, and display my name, likeness, image, voice, photograph, video, and recordings in any media now known or hereafter developed, for any lawful purpose related to MOWO's mission, operations, or fundraising activities, without further notice, approval, or compensation.

    I waive any right to inspect or approve the finished product or the use to which it may be applied. I release Meals on Wheels of Odessa from any and all claims arising out of the use of my image, likeness, voice, or recordings, including any claim for invasion of privacy, defamation, or right of publicity.

    If I do not wish to be photographed or recorded, I will notify MOWO staff in writing, and MOWO will make reasonable efforts to honor that request going forward.

  • I hereby voluntarily assume all risks associated with my participation as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Odessa, including but not limited to any risks arising from personal injury, property damage, or other loss resulting from my participation in volunteer activities or any additional interactions with Meals on Wheels of Odessa clients outside the scope of my volunteer role.In consideration of being permitted to volunteer, I, for myself and on behalf of my heirs, assigns, personal representatives, and next of kin, hereby release, waive, discharge, and hold harmless Meals on Wheels of Odessa, its sponsors, affiliates, officers, directors, employees, contractors, managers, clients, agents, and volunteers (collectively, the “Released Parties”) from any and all claims, demands, causes of action, liabilities, damages, losses, or expenses (including attorneys’ fees) of any kind or nature, whether known or unknown, foreseen or unforeseen, arising out of or relating in any way to my participation in volunteer activities or other interactions with Meals on Wheels of Odessa clients, including but not limited to those arising from the negligence of the Released Parties.This waiver and release is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the laws of the State of Texas, and if any portion hereof is held to be invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect.*

    Meals on Wheels of Odessa reserves the right to deny or discontinue volunteer service at its sole discretion if any publicly available information, background check results, or conduct by the volunteer is determined to negatively impact the organization's programs, clients, operations, or reputation.

    Privacy of Volunteer Information

    Meals on Wheels of Odessa respects and protects the privacy of its volunteers. All personal information provided by volunteers will be:

    • Kept confidential and used solely for internal organizational purposes
    • Not sold, distributed, published, or shared with any third parties

    Exceptions: as required by law or with the volunteer's express written consent.
